Day 7: I’m blogging about diaper bags

Day 7: Diaper Bag continued

Today Clare worked with a quilter to develop a quilt pattern for the diaper bag. The pattern that Clare showed me is really cool. It’s almost enough for me to get excited about diaper bags. Almost. Just kidding. It’s one of the coolest bags I’ve seen in a long time, no matter what it’s primary function is.

    Dear Timbuk2 moms,
Rest assured that we’re working on a design for one, but at this point we don’t have a timeline for it’s release yet. In the meantime I would suggest putting your diapers in something… a classic messenger or a cargo tote perhaps. Baby can’t wait to have his diaper changed!

I am desperate for a Timbuk2 diaper bag. I am making due with my old messenger that got me through undergrad and law school but one with more pockets (bottles rolling around in the bottom is scary!) would be perfect. A pocket for a changing pad would be nice too. This is a major opportunity that you are missing. Moms and dads spend ridiculous money on baby gear. Get in on that market! Oh, and the product doesn’t have to be all girly-ed out with quilting and stuff. I want my reliable, dependable, metro looking bag with baby compartments. :)

I am so glad to hear that you are working on a diaper bag – hooray!! I just got on your website to suggest it. I would prefer solid colors like black, red, brown, or light green. Features that I would love to have are:
    - 2 exterior compartments for baby bottle or water bottle
    - 1 exterior pocket for changing pad
    - fold-up changing pad
    - 1 insulated compartment for bottle or food
    - small zippered pouch for my wallet & keys
    - zipper along top of middle compartment so things don’t fall out
    - compartment near front for cell phone
    - removable pouch inside for wet clothes or other wet items
    - multiple mesh compartments inside for items like pacifiers, diaper cream, etc.

I hate to do this, but since the timeline is probably long for the timbuk2 bag, I thought I would recommend the bag that we bought.

Dad’s need the bag too! Tired of carrying the fru fru bags. Would love something that can double as a diaper messenger bag and a bag durable and comfortable enough for a motorcycle ride. Unless Timbuk2 doesn’t come up with one soon….may have to resort to the Diaper Dude Messenger II (http://www.diaperdude.com/store/product.php?productid=16207&cat=251&page=1)

PLEASE, please get this done soon! I have two months until I’ll be forced to buy something that will be far inferior to anything you guys make, and that will be nigh on impossible to get babydaddy to use. Any updates?

I’ll do my best and I feel your pain. There’s no need for men to have to carry prissy diaper totes if they don’t want to!

    Nette,
I feel you too. The last I heard, this project is a year out from being commercialized. Talk it out with babydaddy, he’ll have to use something; ’cause baby will need it’s diaper changed!

A year out? Phooey! I LOVE my Timbuk2 backpack, and was so hoping that you would have something already going. Want some testers? I am due any moment, and live in the Bay Area…. Still, I am really glad to hear that you will have something for future generations.

After researching many diaper bags, my husband says he will not use anything other than a Timbuk2 diaper bag. He is requesting a diaper bag in the form of a messenger bag that is made for a guy!! Maybe in some kind of earth color or gray, or black. He does not like the one you have above with the leaves. Something in a solid color and messenger style. With a comfortable strap.

With lots of pockets with different uses. A main compartment for clothes, blanket ect and a bottle holder, pocket for wallet and cell phone, baby food compartment, small detachable bag for diaper wipes, holder for husbands own drink (s0da) – maybe somewhere on strap, a detachable baby changing mat that is inside the bag, a pocket or attachment of some kind for the baby’s teether or pacifier, a separate section for baby’s grooming items.

A Timbuk2 diaper bag would be great, but since no timeline, we’ll have to make do with other options.

I’m a dad who recently received one of the bags mentioned above. The “Diaper Dude” (nice name, lol) Messenger II. Talk about a pretty slick bag. Feels great, definitely not cheap material or production. Looks great! Pretty stylish and what I like are all of the compartments and spots. Best of all, it’s pretty inconspicuous. You’d think it’s just a book bag. I’ve made due with it for about 2 months now and really like.

I’ll keep my eye peeled for that Timbuk2 dad bag though. Don’t forget us Dads!

Any news or approximate release dates on the diaper bags? I’ve been using my cargo bag as a diaper bag and it works great…except that I used to use it as a work bag and now I’m sorta tired of it. Came onto the site to investigate ordering a new, custom one and found that there might be a diaper bag in the works. Would LOVE a Timbuk2 diaper bag. I’ve carried Timbuk2 through all the phases of my life…messenger bag when I was a single gal commuting by bike through the city, cargo tote when I worked in City Hall, now I’m drooling over the potential of a diaper bag (pregnant with my second).

I’ve loved my Timbuk2 messenger bag since I purchased it two (or, was it three) years ago. It is an indispensable part of my daily routine. As a new Dad, I’d LOVE the option of purchasing a Timbuk2 diaper bag. My wife and I were just talking about such a development today. Speed this thing to market, gang; there is a DEFINITE audience for it!!!

Put one vote in for a diaper backpack!

My husband and I currently carry all things baby in about 4 different Timbuk2 bags depending on the situation. I have an awesome cargo tote and he has a black messenger for short trips, but for longer trips or when either of us is alone with the baby we both prefer backpacks. *SO* much easier to carry a backpack when you have the baby in a Bjorn or any front carrier. Of course, if Timbuk2 came out with any diaper bag I would likely buy it. I love some of the suggestions above and have a few:
    * I second the plastic bag inside for wet clothes, etc.
    * Mesh pockets for diapers
    * Outside pocket for folded changing pad (I much prefer this outside rather than trying to find the pocket inside while holding a wiggly baby)
    * Pocket and plastic carrier for wipes
    * Possible cooler area for carrying milk (would love this for carrying pumped milk home from work)
    * Separate compartment for clean clothes
    * Outside pocket for keys, small toys, snacks, etc.
    * Easily detachable stroller straps
Thanks for all the great work. I can’t wait to see the bag!

OK here is my hack! I purchased the small cargo tote as I didnt want ANOTHER massive diaper bag and since I am only 5′3″ big diaper bags tend to overwhelm me. The small cargo tote is perfect, just my size.

I also got the ju ju be snack capsule (http://www.ju-ju-be.com/addons.html) and it fits great with 2 jars of food, a snack container, bib, burp cloth and 2 spoons. I purchased the quick change set (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index….) to throw in, it has a pocket for a change of clothes and a zipper pocket for soiled ones.

I fit a thermal blanket and a diapees and wipees case (http://www.diapeesandwipees.com/) which is AWESOME! I love that thing, just grab and go, I fit 3 diapers, a disposable changing pad (which I use multiple times) and a case of wipes all in there and just grab that for a quick change.

I got a splat mat for the tables (http://www.oreoriginals.com/estore/lo...) and fit in my new wallet also purchased from O.R.E. (http://www.oreoriginals.com/estore/lo...) which is a little bigger then I expected but actually wound up working out better than I imagined.

I can also fit in a small book, sippie cup (or bottle), teething blanket (http://store.babycenter.com/product/c...) a pill case, small pouch (for mommys make up and chapstick, with a coin purse on the back) and a few small toys to keep baby occupied.

I attached a paci pod (http://www.amazon.com/JJ-Cole-Essenti...) which holds 2-3 soothie pacifiers and one clip toy on the outside. Finally , in the very front outer pocket, I keep some folded up baby throw away diaper sacks and a pen.

*WOW* It actually looks really nice and fits just perfect for me. I HOPE this helps out other moms, I am SO happy with my timbuk2 hack on a diaper bag. After 3 kids (2 step daughters I had from 1.5 years and 6 months onward and now a new baby boy) I finally got one I like!!! THANK YOU TIMBUK2!!!! :)

We just bought a Timbuk2 to use specifically as a diaper bag. After we bought is my friend mentioned that some people have retro-fitted theirs to make it more baby friendly. I am ecstatic that you are making a real diaper bag… but please – keep it simple in the design. I bought the Timbuk2 specifically because it doesn’t look like some sissy bag. I want my husband to carry it around. The photo you have above would not make the cut – way too girly – though the extra pockets look perfect.

It’s now at February’s end. Is there an ETA for the diaper bag. I barely look at other bags because I am a loyal timbuk2 carrier. I will be happy to be part of a test group. Due date 25 June 09

The timbuk 2 bag which is diaper bag. It is excellent use because it can accomodate all the stuff required by the baby.

I really wanted this, but I couldn’t wait, so I bought one from dadgear.com. I was surprised as to how similar it is in many ways to the Timbuk2 stuff. It’s serving my needs nicely, though I’d rather have bought from Timbuk2 if I had the option.

J, thanks for your comment and sorry we are so damn slow. We are working on the diaper bag, just takes a while to get it perfect. dadgear is pretty cool, but we think the T2 take will be rad. Thanks again for your comment and we hope you enjoy your bag.

It’s funny that I found this thread cause I came on your site specifically to find a diaper bag. I have one of your laptop bags (in navy) that I love & my hubby (who is a totally functional k.i.s.s. guy who until recently only had 1 pair of shoes he actually wore) will actually use it too. I was hoping for the same for a diaper bag. So I came here. The laptop bag is nice but seems like it wouldn’t be as functional as I’d like. I was so surprised to see I’m sort of out of luck, one of your travel bags with the ventilated outer pocket looks like it might sort of work. But my hubby would not be fond of the color it comes in so it’s not worth it. I’m bummed. Your bags are great, super sturdy, but without more pockets wouldn’t be very useful. Another bag I already have (not a diaper bag per se) is nice but some features are not as nice as yours, being super easy to open & close with combo of velcro & buckles for example…

Hoping for an update on when the Timbuk2 diaper bag will be available. The posts here seem to want what I want– I just grabbed a Skip Hop Via Messenger and it is close but not quite it. Needs to be roomier for lunch stuff and a fleece. The pockets are awfully close. Dying for the Timbuk2,

Although a Timbuk2 diaper bag would be great, one product that would be great would be a breast pump replacement bag. My wife uses a Medela breast pump at work, which comes with a backpack or a messenger bag. The problem is the bags are small and have no additional storage if you want to do something in addition to pumping. When she goes to work, she brings the pump & bag, but also would like some additional room for her lunch, purse, etc. Love your stuff, but a breast pump replacement bag would be excellent.

Please, please, PLEASE keep working on the diaper bag. I’ve been looking everywhere for weeks now–and nothing holds a candle to my trusty Timbuk2. Since I’m not bottle feeding, it will be pretty easy for me to hack a new messenger into a diaper bag–but some extra pockets, a removable changing pad that fits INTO one of those pockets, an insulated pouch, and a wet compartment would go a LONG way to making me a happy pregnant girl.

You guys have a whole generation of customers who are growing up, having families, trying to be “adults.” I know diaper bags hardly fit into the hardcore urban image you have created with your brand, but trust me, you have a market. There are cool, urban, hipster parents out there who don’t want ANY bunnies on their stuff, and who want a bag that’s as comfortable and functional as it is stylish.

Throw us a bone! Make a bag! or even just a different type of pocket insert that you could use in the create-a-bag! Help!
