I used Timbuk2 as an example of how companies can embrace Web 2.0 technology to better serve its customers, in a recent presentation. I used my own custom messenger as a prop, it got a laugh, so thanks. Trust me you guys are way ahead of most companies in that you use a blog, flickr, etc. to build community! that is me & my small, custom, black/pink/purple timbuk2 messenger in tokyo - just before typhoons 13 & 14 “blew through” during the typhoons (which i was totally outside for) everything in my timbuk2 stayed completely dry. perhaps, i should have been inside the bag too…

this bag has also been to the uk, canada, and all over the us, from dc (home) all the way to seattle.

not pictured is my bag’s identical big brother which has been everywhere the little one has been - checked & carried on!

My bag was bought in the Timbuk2 shop in San Francisco, lives in London, has travelled all over Europe and had its picture taken just before I flew back from Hong Kong to London Heathrow.

My ever faithful Timbuk2 and I making our escape from the Chateau d’if.

My Timbuk2 has to be the best item I’ve ever traveled with, EVER! My friend Ami and I planned a 3 month backpacking trip to Europe and had months to get pumped up for the trip. When we arrived in Spain, I learned that my checked-in backpack was lost. The only thing I had with me was my Timbuk2 Metro bag and its contents. Thankfully that turned out to be enough to live off of for several weeks as I made my way through Spain, Andorra, southern France, and finally to Italy. A box of goodies sent to a friend’s place from home saved the rest of the trip for Ami and I, though my Timbuk2 did an amazing job in the meantime! The best part is that after taking it through the places mentioned above, plus eight other countries on the trip, it still looks brand new! I love this bag!

Is it against the rules to post two pictures? In addition to a picture with myself carrying my bag, I think a close up of how sun-bleached my bag is would be fairly effective.

My Timbuk2 Dee Dog acquired from GearHead website back in 1995. Apart from being my daily pack in New Zealand, it also act as my day pack in various trips to US, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea and its most recent epic trip in greater China region. It had certainly seen some rough usage, but the bag just laughs at it. Here it is sitting under the glamorous sun on the Tibetan Plateau. Since then the bag has been blessed my Tibetan monks, being hauled all the way to North East China to be blessed again by an Orthodox priest…
My friends names the bag Dakota after the legendary cargo plane. 13 years of continuous usage and it just refuses to retire :)

Whether it’s my Classic Messenger, Marina, or perfect purse Metro, I never leave home without a timbuk2 bag on my shoulder. My bags have been all over the U.S. from the local farmers’ market to New York City.

I spent 3 months in Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia studying and working as an artist. While working on my outdoor installation pieces, the one in Zagreb, Croatia, in particular, I was never without my Timbuk2 Classic carrying my cameras, sketchbooks, and language guides. It certainly helps to have a trusty bag to stow all of my essentials when handling several clay pots in wheel barrows!

There is no photo for where my Timbuk2 bag has been, but it has been with me for the past 8 years! I originally got my bag when I was working at a YMCA Conference Center in Northern New York while lifeguarding. I believe it is the brother of Rob, Nathan, who first told me about these bags and how great they are. I ordered it from the website through the build your own application and I love my bag! It has been with me from NY, to NJ, VA, VT, Long Island, on planes to FL and AZ.

Recently bought 2 Timbuk2 bags from the Timbuk2 website, a small messenger and a metro. I love the metro! Small enough to carry anywhere, and yet big for me to put the stuff I need. Chose Timbuk2 for it’s cool design and durability, in view that I need a hardy bag for travelling as a day pack.

Took the small messenger with me on a recent trip to Mulu, Sarawak, Malaysia to see the caves there. Was considering whether to take the metro or the messenger, but chose the messenger with it being waterproof, as it rains quite often in the jungle. Packed a DSLR, a medium sized digital camera, raincoat, cap, medium sized towel, snacks, torchlight, camera batteries and memory cards in it.

Every Thursday afternoon, I ride my bike to the hospital to shadow a general surgeon…but this time, I woke up and saw: SNOW SNOW SNOW! So I donned the powder skis instead of the bike that morning…but not before stopping at the toboganing hill at the local high school, and sharing some turns with the toddlers. My bag, which has played the role of rope bag (climbing), luggage and carry-on on dozens of trips and cycling saviour, now took on the role of shamelessly weather-resistant protector of lunch and laptop: on the way home, it was snowing hard, and my bag held up beautifully and kept everything dry: the computer, the beer and the paperwork.

No exotic location here. No fancy story. I’m an emergency response social worker for Child Protective Services. Me and my Timbuk2 bag (http://www.flickr.com/photos/49059247@N00/2715807234/ investigate allegations of child abuse and neglect each and every day. We see some pretty terrible things together, but I wouldn’t have any other bag. I chose the small size and my referrals, danger assessments, safety plans, drug test kits, notebooks for statements and genograms, civil rights pamphlets, and protective custody documents fit perfectly. Thanks Timbuk2 for making my job just a little easier.

Here’s a set of pictures of me with my Timbuk2 in Japan (2004), Europe (2005), Spain (2007). You can’t always see the bag itself, but in every picture, you can definitely see the strap over my right shoulder. In 2005, I took a two-month backpacking trip through western and central Europe, visiting more than 25 cities. For six out of the eight weeks, I traveled by myself through France, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. My Timbuk2 during those that solo trip, was my best travel companion. As for the “best” place where my Tibuk2 has been? It’s hard to say, but one of the most unique was Eagle’s Next in Bavarian Germany. Eagle’s Nest was Hitler’s chalet in the German Alps. It’s surrounded by beautiful mountains, and it’s strange to think that Hitler could have been surrounded by such natural beauty, yet it had no affect on his conscience or soul.

I purchased my first 2 timbuk2 messenger bags in 2007 (small & xlarge). I used these bags for my trip to London & Paris with my 2 1/2 year old son. The xlarge bag is used as a carry on bag & holds everything including the kitchen sink! The padded strap pad
makes for a lighter load. I used the small messenger as a purse. Great for travel. Since then, I now own messengers in small, medium, large and extra large. I own 2 large market totes (one not pictured), 2 backpacks and a blogger (not pictured) along with lots of accessories. Why so many bags you ask? With a 3 year old, different sizes are needed depending on the activity or occasion. These bags will see lots more travel and daily use.
These bags have become my best friends!!

My bag hasn’t travelled far since it made the trip from the US to its home in the Faroe Islands this spring. But when you live in the Faroe Islands you don’t have to go on a long journey to see exotic places.

This is my tote in Frodba on the island of Suduroy and onboard the good ship Smyril:

I have a bag I got back in 98 when I first moved to SF. We hung out in a bar (the Eagles Drift Inn) on 3rd and Bryant. My buddies there said go out and buy the biggest bag you can get, then we’ll show you how to poke a hole in the top and wrap it with a bungie cord. I got a “Bolo” bag, a little ditty pouch (for bridge toll on my motorcycle) and put a hole through it so I can close it with bungie cord. I’ve been able to take two rack mounted computers on my bike around town. Now I just dug out a little radio strap I had and stuck my ham radio in it. This bag has been all around the US, to Basel, Switzerland and to the Taj Mahal including all stops along the way.

It’s true… buy the biggest bag you can.

This is my Timbuk2 small classic messenger bag, which has been with me for the past 5 or 6 years. It’s been all over the world with me: London twice, Paris, Bangkok twice, the Philippines (as in the photo - the beautiful beaches of Boracay), Hong Kong four times, Angkor Wat Cambodia, Buenos Aires, Costa Rica, Reykjavik, and Shanghai. That’s not to mention Toronto, NYC, Boston, SF, Chicago (home), Bar Harbor, Portland ME and OR, Seattle, etc. It carries all my essentials, including my dSLR, a book or two, a journal, several pens, a notepad, a compact towel, tissues, my passport, and other assorted odds and ends. It’s definitely the best bag I’ve ever purchased, including the large Classic that I thought would replace it!

Here is a pic from a trip my cousin and I took to Niagara Falls (the U.S. side). While at the park and visiting the falls we decided to go on the cave of the winds tour. The tour takes you down an elevator 175 feet to the bottom of the falls and lets you walk underneath the right-most portion of Niagara Falls called the Bridal Falls. We thought there would be lockers to keep our cell phones, shoes, and valuables in… we were wrong. Instead, we put all our things in my bag and they ended up being the only things dry at the end of the tour. We got drenched. My cell phone was very happy that my bag could withstand the torrent of the falls.

My best friend had a Timbuk2 bag that she took everywhere! She raved about it as the best bag ever! She even got me one for my birthday and I love it. She had a fire in her apartment in 2/08 and lost everything. I remember her pulling her water damaged bag out of the wreckage and it looked perfectly inact! I was shocked that the bag survived! Unfortunately it was so water and smoke damaged that she had to throw it out. She would love a new Timbuk2 bag more than anything. Thanks so much for this opportunity and I just know she would be so grateful!

Portland, OR. The place has become synonymous with biking. And synonymous with biking is Timbuk2. I have borrowed my friend’s bag as I needed one while traveling around the city. It is perfect: large, easy to open, pocketed.

Here is a photo of my bag being worn by former mayor, Vera Katz, http://www.flickr.com/photos/wittcogmbh/2744862077/

My bag goes with me everywhere. I understand that I have not taken it to the tops of any great mountains or through any barren deserts. However, it has held 27 diapers, wipes, bottles, and food for a day trip with my son as we rode through the city to the Zoo. And what is more challenging that riding with a 2 year old to the Zoo? Not much.

That bag carries it all. In fact, when he tuckered out part way through the Zoo, I slung the bag in front and put my son part way in it and used my Timbuk2 bag as an urban sling.

Currently, my custom Timbuk2 bag is with me in Yerevan, Armenia, where I am interning at the U.S. Embassy. (In case you don’t know where Armenia is, it’s right next to Georgia, which has been in the news in the past couple of days!) I’ve been here since the end of June and will be here for another month. I’ve had this bag about a year and a half. Normally it resides with me in Chicago, lugging my computer and books to school, but I needed something to carry my computer in to Armenia.

My two pictures are from earlier today, actually, when I went up to Lake Sevan to help with a triathlon organized by people at the Embassy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29441320@N04/2749462383/

My Timbuk2 bag has served as my rehearsal bag for the Citations Drum & Bugle Corps of Burlington, MA for the past 4 summers. Drum corps is an activity closely related to marching band, only the season is during the summer, woodwind instruments are not allowed, the field shows are much more challenging, and the competition is extremely fierce. We hone our skills for hundreds of hours throughout the summer, competing around the country, and spending two entire weeks on the road traveling, practicing, and performing. In this picture, it is about 5:30 AM on the morning of our Finals competition this past Saturday in Bloomington, IN before our last competition. Over the past four years, finals have been located Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, WI, The Rose Bowl in Pasedena, CA, and IU’s Memorial in Bloomington, IN. I will have pictures of the bag’s “tan lines” soon. My baritone horn (I’m holding it in the picture) has shown many more signs of wear than the bag, which seems practically indestructable despite the abuse it’s been through. For more information on the activity, visit http://www.dci.org .

    Hi everybody,

I wanted to share the story about my Timbuk2 Classic messenger bag with you guys.
My bag has travelled everywhere with me for the past 5 years. Its homebase is Groningen, The Netherlands, for bringing my books and papers from home to work (and ofcourse always on my bike, it’s the Netherlands!). The adventures and places it has been include: Portugal, backpacking in Jordan, christmas in Germany, Spain, Netherlands Antilles, St Louis, Mount Vernon and Washington DC, Sweden, volunteer work in Kenya (carrying antibiotics and toys for the children who were operated (sounds really cheesy but it’s true!), numerous skiing trips in Switserland and France, and everwhere across the Netherlands. Here you can find some of the pictures with my bag http://www.flickr.com/photos/28755036@N03/

But now it is STOLEN. On its last trip in Valencia, Spain, my fantastic bag was robbed!! I tried to run after the thief, but with no luck (ofcourse)! Going to the police in Spain is an adventure by itself, but because of all the robbery everyday, the forms are already translated in English! I included some pictures of the form.
Fortunately nobody was hurt, but my beloved bag is gone. The bag with stickers from the Kenya airport, with some dust from the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan (without getting it on my camera, thanks to my bag!), in short: with all my memories!
I cannot begin to tell you how much I miss my bag. And ofcourse, my insurance company will not pay anything because it is already 5 years old, but they don’t know that a Timbuk2 messenger bag can last a life time! It didn’t had a scratch on it.
So hopefully you can give me a chance in this rough competition for a new Timbuk2 bag. I wouldn’t know what to do with my stuff on all my future travels.

  45. Posted August 11, 2008 at 11:57 am | Permalink

My Timbuk2 bag has been to North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia! I even personalized it with some art from Kenya. It’s a comfy, stylish way of keeping my gear close, safe and dry.

Check my photostream to see it being carried by a camel in the Moroccan Sahara; checking out the biggest waterfall in Plitvice National Park in Croatia; looking over the Adriatic Sea from a cliff on an island near Dubrovnik, Croatia; taking in a sunset over the Sierra-Nevadas in Granada, Spain; and sitting on a street in Krakow, Poland.

Well, my timbuk2 bag is proud to have traveled in North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. I even customized it by adding some Maasai art from Kenya to the middle panel.

It’s the best for keeping my gear close, safe and dry.

Go to my flickr photostream to see photos of it being carried through the Sahara by a camel; on a street in Krakow, Poland; at the top of a cliff overlooking the Adriatic on a Croatian island; resting by the biggest waterfall in Croatia in Plitvice national park; on a picnic table at the Grand Canyon; and watching the sun set over the Sierra-Nevadas in Granada, Spain.

At 30 years old I deliberately turned my world topsy turvey. I moved to the island of St. Kitts, West Indies, where I started Veterinary School at Ross University. Part of the allure in attending Ross U was the location, as I had never lived outside of Tampa, FL, my entire life. In planning for my future schooling, I found myself searching the internet for the perfect laptop/school bag. I received much advice about what makes the perfect bag – but for me the most important part would be that it reflected me as a person, was durable, and would be there for me in the next few terrifying (yet exciting) years. I wanted a bag that was flexible – I could fill it with books/laptop one day and groceries or beach gear the next. And the waterproof quality was definitely a plus.
I have received a lot of flak for the large size of my messenger bag (had to get a large to fit my laptop). In fact, most people who see my bag for the first time mock it. That is, until they need me to carry large amount s of stuff for them or hold onto something important during one of our random rain showers. I remember my first week here leaving the port with 3 bottles of rum, 3 bottles of wine, and various produce items that my friends couldn’t carry. No one was complaining about my big bag then!
My bag was a bit lonely, though, being mocked by my friends. That is, until she met her mate: my friend Kristen’s medium custom messenger. The two of them have explored this island up and down, have hung out between classes down by the ocean, and sunbathed on the beach together.
Kristen and I do our part for Timbuk2 in spreading the word about these wonderful bags all over St. Kitts. Thanks for all you do!
