The New York Times has featured several articles on fashion and cycling of late. Today it’s an aspirational piece about biking in Amsterdam, “where riding a bicycle to work in a suit and tie is as notable an act as drinking a cup of coffee, there is no bike culture — all culture includes the bike.” The author asks, “Can the urban cyclist, he of the ragtag renegade clothes or shiny spandex, grow up and put on a tie?”
I don’t know about you, but I definitely look this good when cycling to work. My hair defies helmet-head, my body does not produce sweat, and I repel the grease involved in changing flats. Not quite there yet? Use this for inspiration.

Lizzy, I love you!
This cracked me up, I wonder some mornings why I bother with styling my hair or putting on make up if the sweat & helmet combo quickly undo them. And while I don’t personally ride in spandex, my patched up jeans from some spills don’t look quite as dashing as the man in a suit.
Hey, that fancy pants commuter doesn’t have a Timbuk2 bag! booo!
Well, the man in the suit certainly makes me think I could do a little better. The wet ponytail and rolled pant leg are hardly sophisticated. I think I’ll get some perforated white leather gloves and wear boots tomorrow. I’ll be “hot.”
um, no one looks this good biking. and no bikes in $500 pants. they bike in dirty jeans and beat up messenger bags. this uy i am sure would ride with prada and take a cab, but awesome article lizzy. i kinda want that bike, though my hair is not a nice as his.
In honor of Mr. Gucci Biker, I wore my jewelry on my ride this morning. I usually wait and put it on at work after cooling off by the fan at my desk, but not today! And now I have little bruises on my wrist from my bracelets rattling around. Awesome.
Double jacket issue: because his body is colder while biking than walking around town or because he’s covering up the pit stains from his grueling work-out?
… Still pondering.
Thank you for posting this! I looked up the photographer credit (amsterdamize.com) and have been spending time going through the archives! Thanks!
Get with the new age of getting to and from the office, on a bike. There are many arguments that can be made not to bike to and from work but there are also many that can be made on the opposite side of that argument. It is in the end a preference and willful desire to make a difference.
