Annie - Amazing. Thanks for the details. I've been all over East Africa, but I'm dying to go to West Africa! So happy you had an awesome time there. I'm dying to go to the Mali music festival.

Lizzy - Timbuktu was flat and dry, hot, sandy. It has the oldest mosque in West Africa, from the 14th century, but most of its significant historical items were looted by Moors and taken to Morocco hundreds of years back. West Africa culturally and geographically begins to meet North Africa there. It's far away from everywhere else in Mali- the boat ride up the Niger river took three days and was awesome. We camped out on the deck for all three nights (and took an SUV back). Mali is an awesome place to be a backpacker.
