Car-Free Communities

In the NYTimes yesterday, there was an article about a car-free community called, Vauban, in Germany. You literally cannot bring your car into the community; residents park their cars (if they have them) in lots on the community outskirts and ride their bikes or take the tram to get where they’re going within the community. How cool! Taking a nod from these crafty Germans, a Bay Area planning association is planning a Vauban-like community just outside Oakland called, Quarry Village. 105 of the 1,000 planned homes are spoken for already. You best get after it if you’re ready to ditch your car and live in this bike grotto.
