    Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

    Picked-up the small in black/brown canvas, my first Timbuk2 bag and there's lots to like about it. Thought I'd address some of the points other reviewers have made.

    1) Strap

    At 5'8", the length of the strap is A-OK for me, neither too long nor short to wear the bag at or above waist level. The pad on the strap is slightly curved to contour the left shoulder and stays in-place nicely. That the pad is not removable is a plus to me, although some folks seem to dislike that in other reviews. The buckle is neat, leaving no hanging loops as on some other bags. While it has held fast without slipping in my experience, I can understand the concerns of those who fear it might not be strong enough to prevent slipping. I'm not in the habit of loading the bag to the hilt, so that day may be the true test.

    2) Interior Organisation

    There have been comments that the previous-gen messenger had more internal organisers. The 2014 edition has plenty of interior pockets for my liking, I'm not sure what these people are trying to carry with them.

    3) Compression Straps

    These are pretty long & dangle constantly, which detracts from the overall clean look (given the concealed fasteners). I'm not sure how this would be solved through design, but if it were possible to somehow rope them in that would be an improvement.

    4) Exterior Pockets

    It's true that while there are two zippered & one "slash" pocket on the outside of the bag, they are all effectively on top of each other. So putting anything larger than a stack of business cards into one of them pretty much prevents the use of the other two pockets for anything but spare change. I'll note that this has not been an issue for me as yet, but those who intend to carry their house on their back might have some difficulty here. One thing I'm still missing a bit from my previous bag is a small/thin pocket that can be accessed from the outside of the bag without opening. I presume this is the intended use of the Napoleon pocket, but that's just a bit small for my liking (to hold travel documents, for example).

    But in general, these are minor details and there's much that I like including the strong velcro (I never bother with the fasteners), comfort of the strap, colour selection, and what at this point seems to be a solid build quality

      Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

      I have been carrying a backpack to work (University campus) for over three years and wanted something a little more stylish. I saw a review of this bag and it looked great. I actually received it as a birthday gift in Medium.

      As a woman, who is not that tall, the size of the bag concerned me but looks wise, it was okay. Here is why I returned it:

      The pockets and inner compartments could be tweaked a bit. I think for men, they work okay but woman have more stuff and need deeper pockets.

      This is one example that could go either way but the pen pockets are not deep enough when you have something in the zippered pocket behind it. I was afraid to leave a pen there because it seemed like it would poke through.

      The interior mesh water bottle pocket and the one across from it are pretty useless unless the compression straps are fully extended (loose). When cinched at all, they do not allow those pockets to be deep enough to hold anything. I had trouble getting a smallish water bottle in there and who would want a water bottle inside with their laptop anyway?

      Laptop slash pocket was the perfect size for my Macbook Pro but there is no padding. I am not hard on my bags but this should be noted.

      The grab handle is really not meant to be a carrying handle. I knew this going in but what I did not realize was that grabbing it with the bag slightly open causes everything to be thrown forward. Not a problem for larger items but smaller items could be lost if you aren't paying attention.

      Overall, it just didn't work for me because it could not hold all of my stuff and still be organized. Yes, the stuff fit okay in a medium but it was all on top of each other.

      Would I recommend it? Yes, to a man but not to a woman.

      Too bad because I was very excited about the bag but in the end had to return it.

      Hands Down, The Best Bag I've Ever Owned

          Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

          When I was searching for a new bag, Timbuk2 was naturally at the top of the list. Though I had never owned one of their bags, many friends do; and the quality and design always impressed.

          I had a lesser messenger-style bag which was specifically to my 13" MacBook Air. It had severe shortcomings which made it unpleasant to use. I decided to upgrade. After a lot of investigation, I determined that the Small 2014 Classic was what I needed, so I ordered one.

          The bag is certainly the best made and designed I have owned. Prior to wanting a messenger bag, I was a regular Brenthaven customer. My first Brenthaven was purchased from their first offerings, and I had three more over the next 15 years or so. But, in messenger bags they can't hold a candle to Timbuk2.

          The bag is wonderfully designed. Not without room for improvement, I don't think you could find something better right now. It has enough room for my computer and a variety of other things. I can carry more in the bag than I would want to, it gets too heavy if I actually fill it up.

          I commute on foot 5 to 10 miles a day. I carry everything I need in the bag, and even when I do make it heavier than is ideal, it carries the load gracefully. The strap adjustment is quick and easy, so I can get the bag into just the right spot so it doesn't bounce while walking, then drop it down when I am not moving along. I walk at about 4.5 MPH, quite a brisk pace, but the bag stays on my back without flinching.

          To address some reviewers complaints, which I don't share...

          First, the strap does occasionally twist when I am not actually wearing the bag, never when I am. It fi twists I find it trivial to correct it, and the pad NEVER flips, a problem with many other bags I have owned. In actual use, the strap is perfect and the softness means is conforms well and doesn't cut into me. I like it.

          Second, the cam buckle is brilliant. It never opens unexpectedly (it may be a matter of really getting it closed, I have strong hands and arms and perhaps I don't notice the difficulty in properly squeezing it home). I do know that once it is closed, it stays that way for me. One reviewer complains that a loaded bag cannot be adjusted. Even stuffed full, the strap can be adjusted while wearing it. The trick is to reach around and lift it from beneath to remove the tension, then pull the strap to tightening it. It's easy once you practice.

          Third, the number of compartments is not an issue for me. While I am a person who carries a lot of small items, I can organize my stuff in what is provided. I am not sure that I need more pockets, or if that might really be a negative. To give you an idea of what I manage to carry:

          13" MacBook Air in sleeve I provided;

          In the main compartment: small bag with all the dongles and cables one needs for that and its various accessories; small bag with MBA power supply; headphones for iPhone in box; medium microfiber cloth;

          In the water bottle pocket: a Leatherman Wave with bits in sleeve;
          In the pocket on the other side: a two-way radio with extra battery;

          In the front organizer pockets: two mobile phones; MacBook remote; iPhone tripod; two pens; charging cables for iPhone, other two phones, and bluetooth headset.

          In the front zipper compartment (internal): two sets of keys, extra Li batteries for flashlight, 3.5" folding knife, minimalist first aid kit;

          In the unzippered outside pocket: Timbuk2 wallet (great item!) when I don't want it in my pocket. (note: it would be nice to have some kind of closure on this pocket to prevent the wallet from falling out with the flap is open and the bag is laying down. There is NO danger of it falling out when walking.)

          In the Napoleon (side access) pocket: Fenix PD35 flashlight, or, sometimes iPhone if I need a good signal and pocketing it won't work.

          A long narrative to show that the existing pockets seem quite capable, particularly for a SMALL bag.

          In the end, I don't think you can do better than this bag, though you might have to learn to use some of its features. Buy it.

            Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

            The cross strap that keeps the main strap in place is velcro'd to the bag as the base. This makes it impractical to remove it on days when you're not riding your bike. It just hangs there and gets caught on stuff.

            The top handle is essentially useless because the bag does not have a stiffening system to keep it from drooping down on either side of the handle.

            Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

            I own four timbuk2 messenger bags in all sizes from three generations and I like them a lot. None of them is perfect, the latest one (which I own in M) is the best but some features were better in the former. I use the bag everyday for office where I go with the bike. The most important improvement for me are the flap corners that make the bag more weatherproof cause that was an issue in the past. I also like the new cam buckle which allows to adjust the shoulder strap much better. What I don't like is the new design of the internal organizer which is kind of crude compared to the older one (the pen pockets are completely gone as is the pocket with a velcro flap that was great for the purse). The same holds true for the zip pocket under the flap: There used to be three pockets now it's only one. Finally, the cross-strap used to have a snap hook to fix it on the correspondent ring at the bottom of the bag. That allowed to take it off much quicker than now with the double velcro fix. Despite the critique I like the newest edition of the messenger bag a lot.

              Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

              I was given this bag in the large size as a gift and it is an excellent bag. I don't often ride a bike but I do plenty of running around to catch trains, etc. I find all the features to be well-designed and of very high quality construction. The way the strap adjuster works is very, very cool, and I frequently adjust depending on what else I'm schlepping. The shoulder pad is so great that I ordered 2 more for other straps on various instrument cases I own. The little "grab and go" handles are super. I don't know what the complaints are about pockets - there are at least 8, not including the main compartment or the slash pocket for laptop etc., Some are hidden, some zippered, its wild. Key fob, cup holders, compression straps in case I want to bring a recliner with me... Its really the kitchen sink, while still being very lightweight and attractive (as far as a large messenger bag can be!) Anyway, I'd balance this review out with some "cons" but as yet I don't have any - I've used the bag almost daily for 2 months and its excellent all around, I highly recommend it.

                Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

                I have a 2013 Classic Messenger size S that I use for daily commuting. I carry my wallet, pens, pad of paper, iPad, water bottle, coffee thermos, some odds and ends, and occasionally extra layers depending on the weather, in it. It is a great bag with plenty of compartments. I recently received a laptop at work and decided I needed a bag that was a little bigger so I could cart my laptop around and not have to use the awful bag they gave me at work. I purchased a custom version of the 2014 Classic Messenger in size M. It has the laptop sleeve, and the two drink holders.

                Let's start with things that are good about this bag in comparison to the previous version.
                - The fabric is the same, which I like.
                - The interior has the same nice liner for some rain protection.
                - The concealed flap buckles are nice.

                Okay, now on to the bad. I will start outside and work my way in.
                - The strap is a new material, which is softer, and more pliable. This might seem nice, but it loses it's structure and folds when putting it on.
                - The buckle has changed dramatically from last year. i wasn't a fan of the adjustable buckle on the 2013, but you could work around the quick release mechanism and make it fixed. This new version has a handhold, which should be removed. and when combined with the flimsier strap just makes for trouble. Just give me a strap and that's it. No funny business needed.
                - While the concealed flap buckles are nice, they are attached to some long compression straps, which is just silly. Bottom compression straps are not needed. The buckles are needed in order to keep the bag closed in case you have a ton of stuff in it and the velcro isn't doing the job. I would cut off these compression straps.
                - The Napoleon side pocket is still there, which I like, but the pocket in front of it has changed dramatically. Now, rather than three zippered pockets, we go back to one, and the width of the pocket has shrunk by perhaps an inch? Why remove the extra two pockets?!
                - Inside the bag we have the 'internal organizer for pens, phones and other small stuff'. I love this on the 2013, but we lose stuff on the 2014. There was a nice pocket with a velcro closed flap. That is gone. Pen-sized pockets are gone, but we do get to small pockets that I assume are for pens.
                - Inside the big internal zippered pocket we lose some storage areas too. There was an extra flap with some more little pockets, but not on the 2014 version.

                I am not happy with this purchase. I ordered it online before trying it out, and yes I should have done that, but based on my previous purchases of Timbuk2 bags, I thought I would get an awesome bag. Oh well. I suppose that three good bags out of four isn't so bad, but I really don't see myself using this new one.

                  Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

                  I am a long time Timbuk2 fan (we have an assortment of T2 bags and backpacks in the house), and was looking for an upgrade to something a little bigger than my venerable 2010 XS messenger for my go-to day tripping bag.

                  When the 2014 Small messenger arrived, I had some doubts at first. It really did not feel very substantial when compared to my older bag: thinner strap, less beefy fabric, smaller buckles and parts, etc. Living with it for a week now, however, has erased any concerns.

                  - Great looking, refined style.
                  - Amazingly light and comfortable.
                  - New strap is very comfortable, more solid than expected.
                  - New organizer pockets are just right... I always lost stuff in the nest of pockets in the old organizer.
                  - Elastic pockets on the interior make those extra spaces very useful.
                  - Unexpected bonus: my Thinkpad fits perfectly in the space behind the divider, with room for my iPad, notebook, water bottle, and assorted doodads. Never thought it would fit, and now it's my daily office bag.

                  Cons:
                  - New cam buckle does tend to slip with a heavy load. The strap is a bit shorter, so this doesn't bother me.
                  - Organizer pockets do compete for space, may not work for some. (I tend to carry smaller bits, so this is not an issue for me).
                  - I do miss the handlebar style zipper pulls. :(

                  Overall great value for the money. I am thinking of buying the medium for bigger Carry days, I like this one so much!

                  Comments about Classic Messenger Bag 2014:

                  This bag is perfect! My only criticism is that I can't easily tighten the strap when the bag is full (or even when carrying even just a couple of books and/or my computer) and it does frequently unclip on its own, but these are the most minor of inconveniences and do not stop me from worshiping this bag. Well done!!!
