What are the features?

What's this all about?

Created in reaction to the rise of mighty TSA in American airports, the Commute 2.0 gets smarter every year. Its laptop compartment unzips to lie flat so you don't have to remove your laptop at airport security, and its waterproof TPU flap keeps your gear dry in a drizzle. Additionally, it has external water bottle pockets and a silly amount of internal organization for pens, mice, cords, and bades, and our beleoved red key fob. Thou shall never dig for thy keys or be last through the security line again.

Comments about Commute Messenger 2.0 (2011):

The only downside of the Commmute 2.0 seems to be the that it is a bit stiff and rather feels like a briefcase instead of a messenger bag.

Having said that, I recently had the chance to compare this Commute 2.0 with the other Commute bag that is sold as "Commute 2012" (26942001), and it made me appreciate the 2.0 even more for three distinct reasons:

The main compartment in the 2.0 will always provide the maximum space as all inside pockets are facing outwards. So even when filled, they do not limit the inside space as much as they do on the Commute 2012.

The main strap is attached diagonal, which means it will always stay closer to the body and balance the stiffness of the bag.

The handle is attached between the top cover and the laptop compartment, which means that it will always be possible to hold the bag while opening the cover. That is, the handle is exactly where it should be. On the Commute 2012, all tension is on the flap (which is why the velcro on the Commute 2012 is so much stronger). The position of the handle made me stick to the 2.0 and return the 2012 version.

Else, some details like the rubberized bottom cover justify the upgrade. The TSA-argument is just marketing and of no relevance to the rest of the world.

If you're into carryology and pay more attention to smart design then to messenger bag coolness, then this is the right bag for you. I hope Timbuk2 will keep on producing it as I am in need of size M (even though my 14.1" Dell Latitude fits just fine in my size "S").

My impression is that the 2.0 is the true successor to the original Commute ex 2003-2010, except maybe for the foamed back cover on the original Commute which would have been nice on this one.

Comments about Commute Messenger 2.0 (2011):

As this is billed as a messenger bag, it either needs to have a belly strap or at least some loops for attaching your own, it moves around far too much when cycling.

Comments about Commute Messenger 2.0 (2011):

I'm using this for school and it's large enough to hold notes/ books and a laptop. It's versatile enough for me to use as a sports bag - it can hold a tennis racquet, a change of clothes and drink. Colour is nice so I can use it when I go back to office too.

However, strap can't be shortened too much so bag hangs down too low for cycling. Some threads have also popped from seams- nothing major, but irritating nonetheless

Comments about Commute Messenger 2.0 (2011):

I bought this cool bag for my son who loves Timbuk2.
Unfortunately, the small Messenger did not have enough room for books and a lunch bag. I thought the pockets would expand more.
We still like the bag, but we will use it more later on.

Comments about Commute Messenger 2.0 (2011):

Overall a great bag! My only personal tweaks would be the addition of a couple of D-rings on each side of the bottom of the bag, so that you can utilize the optional cross-chest strap for when you are riding your bike-don't think it would add significantly to the cost but it would to the possibilities.

Also, the back sleeve you would use for a luggage cart will in my customization get a velcro strip along the bottom, so that I can utilize this as a good sized pocket for mail, magazines, a quick drop pocket for receipts, etc. If I ever need to use this feature, I can simply open it up via the velcro enclosure.

Love the bag and quickly bought the Phony padded strap and the cross-chest strap.

I was so happy with my first Timbuk2 product, a Kickstand iPad case, that I decided to try a Timbuk2 messenger. Ive always owned Crumpler and now Timbuk2 is my new best friend! The bag is high quality, easy to use and offers great protection for my products. I really like how my MacBook inserts in an external pocket.

Comments about Commute Messenger 2.0 (2011):

I usually carry my macbook pro 13inch back and forth to work and on trips. This bag has a good compartment for that.....love the fold flat feature for security checks at the airport, although I have yet to experience that with this bag. It replaced a laptop backpack from another company that bit the dust after 15 years of daily use and world travel. I love the extra fabric on the back allowing it to slide over the handle and sit safely on top of a rolling suitcase.

I wish it had a few more pen slots and that the key fob pocket was a bit bigger....I have a lot of keys. I also wish I could get more reflective type decorations to put on it. I'm happy with it so far. It looks like it will fair better than my old backpack did in the rain.

Not good for biking relative to over Timbuk2 bags
