Comments about Especial Medio Cycling Laptop Backpack:

I use this bad to commute on my bike in the daily Portland rain. It doesn't look it but the bag is surprisingly quite waterproof! My contents always arrive dry! It's also more spacious than it looks online. The ulock pouch is a savior and the bottle holders on the other side keeps bottles in even when going off curbs!

The biggest complaint I have about the bag is how the bottom is felt and not the waterproof material. It has gotten so dirty from spray from the bottom of my bike and nothing I do can properly clean it.

Also, if you use the bag a lot, the bottom of the back padding gets a lot of wear. But that's probably expected for what I put it through. That will probably be the first area of the backpack to go.

Comments about Especial Medio Cycling Laptop Backpack:

I use this bag to commute almost every day to work. The reason I selected the Especial Medio after a lot of research was the size and the fact that it was waterproof. I was assured by the sales person at the store that it would keep the water out. It is also clearly stated on the website.

This backpack is not waterproof! Maybe water-resistant at best. Today was a rainy day, one that requires a waterproof bag. My commute is around 50min. My cloths in the bag were wet! My laptop was wet and the screen is ruined!!!

Do not buy this backpack if you are looking for something waterproof!

Great product. Love the design and the space it has for plenty of storage. I particularly love that the outside front pockets are well design to fill plenty of stuff like your helmet. I still need to spend more time wearing it around town to give a full critique, but so far the backpack is solid.

Comments about Especial Medio Cycling Laptop Backpack:

I was looking for a backpack to replace the messenger bag (also a Timbuk2) I had been using for commuting to work for the last 2 years.
My commute generally consists of taking buses, subways or hitching a ride on my colleague's car, followed by using a kick scooter for the last 1km.
The kick scooter was a recent thing and it would be much easier to kick with a backpack, hence the replacement.

I had wanted something bright and as my preferred colors are black, white, grey and blue (yes, boring I know), the "Stormtrooper" color stood out instantly.
I already had a rolled-up waterproof backpack from Overboard (in hideous faded rubbery red), so I was looking for something more stylish and accessible without the rolling, so the Tres was out.
The final shortlist was between the Medio and Vuelo. What won me over was the Medio's good looks and that sneaky expandable helmet compartment.

The great things I like about it:
Very good looking design. People notice it.
That blue lining inside. Don't know why!?
The top zipper compartment for sun glasses.
            Removable waist and stenum straps.
            The large capacity.
The bottle pouches on both sides. Great for holding both me and my toddler son's bottles. One of the pouch even had a velcro strap that can be opened to enable large and tall bottles to be securely carried!

            The not so cool part:
It arrived with some cuts in the smooth glossy white area near the bottom of the bag. The cut left black marks (something rusty?) so it was quite heartbreaking. The packaging had a small puncture as well, so something sharp must have punctured the packaging and cut into the bag. As I was already mentally prepared that a white bag would eventually add to it's character from wear and tear, I decided not to bother with trying to get it exchanged, especially since I got a good deal on black friday.

That same glossy white area was also yellowish instead of the greyish shade I saw on my screen. While I understand that screen colors may not be accurate, it is nonetheless disappointing, especially when the same folks who praised the bag also took notice of the yellowish tint and commented that I must've been using the bag for awhile and it's starting to yellow from age :(

It is slightly uncomfortable to wear at times, when it just seems to dig into my lower back area, but it's not serious.
I did remove the waist straps, so that may be the reason?
The compartments are more than ample but afew are so flat that they are basically just layers of fabrics on top of each other. This means that when one compartment is filled, it swells and other compartments around it cannot be filled or accessed easily. This is especially so for the pockets under the front flap.

I had the bag for only a few days but it's starting to grow on me, despite these issues. Given a choice, I would've coughed up the extra money for a black Medio instead. My current messenger bag is a Timbuk2 Core Laptop Briefcase in full black and it still looks virtually brand new after more than a year of near daily usage!

Oh, speaking of which, the Core uses magnets for the flap, along with minimal velcro and a "hook buckle" (on top of zippers of course). All these made it a joy to open and access.
The Medio is quite Velcro heavy and it is harder and noisier to open the main flap as well as the expandable compartment. I'm not sure if it is to improve the waterproofing, or just by default, but I'm definitely going to add strips of velcro to cover the existing velcro to silence them, as well as sandwich some small neodymium magnets in the velcro layers so they still stay shut.

Hopefully it'll stay white for at least 2 years, when I can justify swapping it for a more practical color!

I really wanted to love this pack!! It was to replace my 30L REI Women's Traverse that I have had for 8 years and the zippers are starting to fail. Pros… I love the rugged material, it looks different than all the other backpacks I see around the office/life, and it has plenty of pockets. Cons…Bulky, pack is very stiff, wider than most backpacks, I feel like I am wearing a parachute pack, the Velcro gets caught on everything from the backpack straps themselves to my gym cloths, and it does not fit easily into a gym locker.

Comments about Especial Medio Cycling Laptop Backpack:

Use: I use this backpack almost everyday. I use it to haul groceries home, I use it for multi-day trips away from home, and I use it to keep electronics dry while biking around in a rainy city.

Pros: Fits everything I need for 5 nights away from home. The helmet pocket swallows up my helmet. Main pocket is quite roomy. Sits high on my back (which I like) and I like that the padding on the back gives some separation between the bag and my back. The padding on the back is pretty comfortable. The sunglasses pocket is also quite roomy. You could fit a typical case in there pretty easily. Actually, I've fit two cases in there pretty easily. The back side pocket is a nice touch, but see note* in cons. The water bottle pocket capacity surprised me. It could fit a 32 oz. nalgene! The interior blue color is very nice. It provides a good contrast against your stuff inside, making things easier to see. I must say, I like having a bottle opener accessible just about everywhere I go. The backpack keeps everything inside of it quite dry during hard rains.

Cons: The pocket for the bike lock needs to be perhaps about a half inch wider, to fit the larger (more common?) U-locks, or the velcro strap could detach in the middle so it could be wrapped around the lock and reattached. Mine fits, but it's very tight. (After about a week of use, its has stretched out some, and my lock fits better. I don't know if this is necessarily a good thing, that it had to stretch out some before it fit my lock better). The opening to the pocket on the front (with the organization pouches) is a bit tight. That could be a little wider, as well as pull out from the backpack more. An initial test of the reflective hits with regular flashlights was pretty unimpressive. But hopefully a test with car headlights will makeup for this. *From watching the video on the Timbuk2 site, I was expecting the back side pocket to be somewhat deeper.* I noticed that when riding my bike and I didn't have much in the backpack, the shoulder straps would dig a little into the back of my neck. The helmet pocket doesn't fit a helmet as well when there are things in the main compartment.
Add a fastening (velcro or a buckle) strap for the water bottle pocket. I had a water bottle fall out of the pocket while riding my bike after the pocket had stretched out some from regular use. Add a zipper to one of the small pouches in the front pocket (i.e. to hold loose change).
After about a year of use, some of the sewing in the front pocket has started to come undone.
