What's this all about?

Now an official winner of the International Design Excellence Award!
We earned a Silver Award in the Personal Accessories category from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Designed in collaboration with San Francisco's Mission Cycling Club, the Raider Pack frees you to get in a pre-work ride without weighing you down.
Weighing less than a pound, the Raider Pack was named after Mission Cycling's morning "raids" up to the to the top of the Marin Headlands before work. Cooked up over a post-ride breakfast at a San Francisco neighborhood café, Timbuk2 and Mission Cycling were sweaty, tired, and sick of carrying their street clothes in bulky backpacks built for hiking. Understanding the need for a small, lightweight commuter pack that could hold the day's essentials without slowing down the pre-work ride, this pack was born.

    Comments about Especial Raider Backpack:

Raise your hand. Pat yourself on the back. Your backpack. That is how awesome it is. This design is so simple. All I need is a pack that I can carry my work clothes, a pair of shoes, and some knick knacks. Boom. Done. If I tried to carry all of this in my other pack I was using, you can be sure it's like my cousin Joe after Thanksgiving: so stuffed you could barely move it. I don't need 30 pockets for my laptop, satellite dish, or pole vaulting equipment. I don't need a pack capable of smuggling jet skis. The reflective panel on the bottom is awesome, considering I ride really early in the morning. Just wish it had a dedicated spot for your bike lock. The pockets on the sides can definitely carry it, but the weight of the lock should be in the middle. Minor problem. However, this pack is on track. The right track. Thanks.

        Comments about Especial Raider Backpack:

I use this as my primary bag for bicycle commuting, personal daily use, and traveling. It's a great all-around bag. After deciding to purchase after a lot of research, while the positives outweigh the negatives for now, my search for the perfect bag may not be over. Being fairly new to bicycle commuting in San Francisco (1 year so far) I have changed through four different bike bag setups so far that haven't been ideal. I have a very conservative office and like to keep my clothes very neat and this bag's garment board is great for that. But although this is the best bag I've had so far, there are two things that I wish were different:

        1) The marketing videos for this bag advertised that it had a moisture-wicking back, which was a pretty nice thing to note. Although appealing and a factor in my decision to purchase, I didn't think that it would be initially important as I am not a heavy perspirer at all. After a few months of use it is very apparent that the bag use itself really does NOT live up to the claim of a moisture wicking back. This problem occurs so much that I have experienced "bacne" for the first time in my life. Sorry for the TMI, but it is really not pretty.

        2) The hook is not an exciting feature. Most locker rooms and showers have hooks anyways, and the top loop can go over almost anywhere the hook can. The rubber hook cap always falls off, and the bare hook has poked a hole in more than one of my knit sweaters. I've since taped over the bare hook, but it is a small detail that should really be made more durable.

For travelling, I'm a pretty minimal packer, so this bag also turned out to be the perfect size and held up great for both a one-week stay in the Costa Rican jungle, and a recent 4-day urban adventure in Portland. I'm small (5' 3''/100 lbs)
so the option of adding a hip strap would be a cool added feature for those with smaller frames.

Overall, I may end up replacing this bag with a different daily commute bag because of the failure to stand up to the claim of a moisture wicking mesh back. Maybe if Timbuk2 does an Especial Raider 2.0 I'd be interested in testing out a redesign. I'll definitely keep this bag as a urban-stylish, comfy, and light weekender.

        Comments about Especial Raider Backpack:

I use this to carry my gym clothes, towel, toiletries, and shoes to work. I also use for softball with my cleats and glove and some snacks. This bag is really great and sleek and stainpeoof. The other day, something spilled in my bag and all I needed was some paper towels to wipe it out and it was as good as new. I am very petite so I usually have issues with unisex backpacks fitting my frame but this one fits very well with a lot of support. With all the pockets to put my keys and wallet and water bottle in, I never have to carry stuff in my hands. I can't say enough good things about this bag.

wish it had one more interior pocket (to hold my Ipad) and a pocket for the hook hanger( i found that the hook would catch on my clothes when i would pull them out). over all great bag

          Comments about Especial Raider Backpack:

This a great lightweight bag that I use to commute and to travel. In the Summer, I ride 11km to get to work, and this is just perfect. It holds my clothes, water bottle, some personal stuff also. It is very lightweight and confortable, I never had a better bag for cycling.

On travel, I like it a lot too. Being lightweight and discreet, it is great to walk around towns, or for hiking. Only con, it isn't waterproof. It is resistant, but continuous rain will get through it. But i guess it is the price to pay to be this lightweight.

Overall a great bag, with a simple and efficient design.

          Comments about Especial Raider Backpack:

I am a bag nut still searching for the perfect bag. Is this it, close to the perfect commuting/light riding bag. I ride 15ish miles one way to work. Holds pants, socks, belt, tie and dress shirt nicely, also bike gear, lights, tool, pump, lock and spare tube, with extra room for lunch. However, if I have to shove my shoes in there size 11 1/2 it is tight (that's what she said). Pockets on side are great can cram a ton of stuff in it.

I like the shirt pocket, nice touch, it works, my shirts don't look like I slept in them. The hanger is nice. Reflective property is also a nice touch so is the light loop. The key holder is nice and long. Lightest biking bag I have.

Fixes: include a small waterproof cover for those sucky days in the rain. Small pocket in front, if you open it while one strap is on your shoulder it tends to puke all your stuff onto the ground and you have to pick up everything like a hobo. Shoulder pads looked bad in the 80's but would be a nice addition to the shoulder pads here. Maybe a detachable waist belt

Still holds lots of stuff...it is a nice and fancy bag. Can not attest for its durability. I am a pretty big guy, had no issue with the schest strap coming off. So far durable, had no issues for the last month that I've been using it. Cleans well. Haven't taken it on a road or mt ride yet, think it will work well for it although there are no openings to put string a water bladder (wait add that to the con list)

The included folding guide and template are the best. There's a hook inside that's great for keeping the backpack open to get your clothes out. The time it takes me to pack, unpack and has been reduced. It doesn't get in your way while riding. I really like the elongated design.

              Comments about Especial Raider Backpack:

Got this bag a few weeks ago to replace an older backpack I was using for my rides where I spend some time at my destination for a while. This bag is extremely lightweight, comfortable, and fits a lot of stuff.

Really impressed with the design. The bag's material has some give to it and will expand slightly to fit the items inside. I'm able to easily get my shoes, change of clothes and my pocket essentials inside the bag.

The fit is perfect for when I'm riding. If I need to get out of the saddle quickly the bag does not move around a bit when using the chest strap. The side pockets also securely hold my fairly large u-lock with out a worry of it falling out.

I did not think that I would actually utilize the hook located on the top inside of the bag, however I find myself constantly using it to hang my bag up at work and at home.
