Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

Got this backpack for my boyfriend as a christmas gift and he loves it. We live in Chicago and he rides his bike everywhere...he needed something lightweight and comfortable that could also fit everything he needs for a big day. I think on his most packed days he works at a research lab in the morning, then goes to work. On these days he is out and about for over 12 hours. He can fit his work clothes, a change of shoes, a water bottle, 3 full meals, folders, and other miscellaneous items with no probelm. The backpack is also very very water resistant due to its roll-top design.

Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

I really wish I had this bag four years ago when I started getting serious about commuting. I got my first messenger bag from timbuk2 something like 10 years ago in middle school, and got another my first year of serious commuting as the school/laptop bag. But I had been using an old backpack for all of my groceries/laundry. Two years ago I moved to a small town and the lay out is not exactly bike friendly, so my round trip for groceries became 6 miles. I didn't realize just how uncomfortable my old bag had become until my first trip with this one after getting home from the parents. I literally wanted to start singing, I was so pleased and I'm not usually a particularly exuberant person.

Even before that trip (literally just got home that's how excited I was), I used the bag as my main carry on for the flight back from the parents, as well as for a bus trip to visit friends. It easily can hold enough clothing for a long trip, or in my case, my laptop, camera equipment, clothes, books, and about 400+ pages of academic articles. For groceries I was able to get my usual weeks worth with room to spare (!!!) and the weight distribution was so great I was able to really book it (making the grocery trip faster A+). I don't think I've ever been so happy about a bag, once again timbuk2 really showed me why I love them so much.

I know some people wish it had more pockets, but I really like the way the pockets are set up - maybe I'm a minimalist but for me too many pockets always just means I lose things or end up having a pocket knife when going through airport security unintentionally. Also, if you use the side zippers it can really compress things when need be.

This bag hits everything I want from a backpack, it can haul groceries, and it works great for traveling - and I can definitely see using it for school as well, which is amazing when you want to live life a little with a little less stuff.

Carries lots of groceries! Front pocket holds all toothbrush, deodorant etc. Side pockets carry my lights and bike locks and small cable. Internal pocket (main compartment) holds my 10 inch tablet plus chromebook. It opens up wide. Padding is legit. I finally started utilizing the stash pocket for wallet, headphones and keys, cell phones.

Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

I use this bag to hold my laptop and gym stuff. The bag itself weighs quite a bit when empty. When I put in my stuff, the weight is substantial. The design of the front compartments need to be improved upon. Because of the flat structure, when one compartment is filled, the one that is directly on top, cannot hold much other stuff. Even when the expansive zips are fully opened, there is not much space horizontally. Most of the volume come from the roll-top section, meaning expansion is upwards.

The side zip is convenient as it provides easy access to the innards. The dark material of the entire bag somehow tend to have white dirt marks easily. The back piece is also v stiff. This can be good or bad, depending on the user. Some people prefer stiff because it provides support for good posture. Some prefer soft so that it contours to the body shape. I prefer the former so all's good.

The side pockets are rather useless - the elastic "closure" need to be improved. Whatever i put in those pockets tend to drop out easily.

On the whole, the bag is large and durable.

Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

14 years ago I bought my first Timbuk2, a large messenger bag. This was my primary bag for school, work as a bike messenger, travel, office jobs, this bag went everywhere with me. Even sent it back to Timbuk2 once for a refresh and nearly cried when I saw how beautiful it was when I got it back. Earlier this year though I got a new job with a longer commute and more stuff I had to bring everyday so it needed something with more capacity. After the years of faithful service from my messenger bag I knew I would only get another Timbuk2. The Especial Tres is a remarkable bag. I can pack ridiculous amounts of stuff in it and yet it still feels light on my back. I didn't think I could love a bag more than my messenger and the Especial Tres may just be that bag.

Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

I am obsessed with this bag! I commute early in the morning, go to the gym, shower, get ready, and then head to work. So I have a LOT of stuff to bring with me (lunch, work clothes, extra shoes, make up bag, book, work papers, sometimes a laptop, sometimes an umbrella, etc). I had been using a cross body duffle bag but it seriously hurt my shoulder with all the weight loaded on to one side every single day. I picked this backpack because of the size/load capacity and for the weight distribution of a backpack. I'm thrilled it holds all of my little extras in addition to my daily necessities (wallet, phone, chargers, tissues, hand sanitizer, etc). It's been life changing. I never thought there was a backpack like this out there for me. I only wish I had gotten this bag sooner!

Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

Most days I ride and drive with my Especial Messenger, but for those BIG days, this big guy somes out. You know what I mean, those days when you have to get to work, but bring leftovers for lunch, pack in the gym clothes and shoes, the protein powder, and stop by the store on the way home (in addition to the standard books, ipad, cables, chargers, pens, notes, etc).

I even use this for weekend trips and work overnights.

The weatherproofing is great - living in Washington leaves a lot of time in the elements to ensure that everthing stays dry - and the coated fabric is easy to wipe down after.

Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

I bought this bag roughly 3 months ago and so far I am quite pleased with it. I was getting frustrated with other bags simply not having enough space to carry all my stuff. As an engineering student, I was often cramming textbooks and notebooks into tiny backpacks and then getting a sore back from carrying it around all day. With this bag I find I am able to easily take along everything I need without even expanding the bag.

For cycling I have found this bag to be tremendous. I hated getting the drenched back after riding to work or to a buddies while carrying a bag, and this backpack solves that issue. Its ventilation system allows the air to flow through minimizing the sweating. Everything about this bag is heavy duty which you can feel in every aspect of it. I can't imagine ever busting a zipper, or ripping a thread on this one. The reflective areas are very unassuming during the day, but are quite bright during the night which is quite nice. The chest and stomach straps hold the bag in securely and the ability for the stomach straps to be easily removed is a huge plus (I don't always want them slapping about when I am at school).

Although the bag is quite large, I find it distributes the weight quite well. Even when over packed it is still very manageable for biking and regular commuting. With all the space I wish that the company had thrown a few more pockets in (internal small pockets for sunglasses, Ipods, etc) but you can't win them all. The front pocket seemed a little too tight at first, but after using it for awhile I realized that it's tightness was actually a plus and helped to keep everything in place even after tossing the bag around. The two side water bottle holders are okay, but nothing special. The mesh is quite weak and I find myself checking to make sure my water is still there (definitely won't stay in while biking). The main compartment is one of the best parts though. It is ginormous and is definitely big enough to fit whatever you need. I packed all my school supplies, my mountain biking shoes, biking clothes, a lunch, my computer, a few beers for after, and strapped a helmet to the front without ever having to stress about running out of space. One thing to get used to with the main compartment though is that it seals with velcro so it can be a little loud when opening. I find myself opening it up at the start of classes, rolling the outer ring down one fold to open it up, and leaving it under my desk so I can reach in without messing around with the velcro again.

So although there are a few minor (SUPER minor) features with this bag, I think that this backpack is perfect for someone looking for a carrier for multiple areas of their life. Whether you are using it for weekend trips, daily cycling, or school, it will definitely not let you down.

Side note: student's get 20% off in their stores!

Comments about Especial Tres Cycling Backpack:

I have the older version of this bag, but it doesn't look fundamentally changed. Mine was also advertised as "weatherproof," which I have discovered means "water resistant." I assume the "increased visibility" they now claim has to do with the reflective stuff they added, not the fact that it's difficult to look over your shoulder past the upper corners of the bag, even when it's all the way rolled down, making lane changes really dangerous. Even so, I've been riding with this thing every day for the past few years now and it hasn't fallen apart, so it has that going for it. When I bought it I had just hoped I could stop packing my change of clothes in plastic bags when I need to ride to work in the rain. For the price, one could do better.
