    Comments about Hudson Laptop Briefcase:

I was contemplating between this and the Proof Laptop Messenger bag (also another Distilled Collection series). But in the end I got this Hudson Laptop Briefcase, because:

    1) "Handle grip" - Is this important? Maybe yes, when I place down my bag on the ground, I can pick it up using the handle grip. Some people mind not having it. I'm indifferent.

    2) Bigger is better - This bag is bigger, it can carry my company's 14" Dell Latitude laptop, which is thick and not an Ultrabook. According to the website, my company's laptop fits this bag but not the Proof Laptop Messenger bag.

    3) Briefcase, in my opinion, is more "mature looking"

    4) Ample compartments - one for my iPod touch, one for BlackBerry, one for iPad, one for Laptop, another one for External Battery Charger or it could fit in a "Phablet" (I believe). And many more, which I don't use often. :)

Some "cons" which I have to point out though:
    1) Like one of the other review. The front big pocket is enclosed by using "buttons". And they are not "magnetic". Unlike magnetic buttons, it needs more effort to
    (a) find the right spot; and
    (b) push it in with slight force; and
    (c) it might close "silently".
And for (c), I get paranoid and I was like.. "did I close it? let me try again.."

    2) Again, like another review. The (removable) strap does not come with a Strap Pad (!!). I knew it in the first place and purchased the Strap Pad from Timbuk2 - "Custom Strap Pad (Medium, Black_888, Waterproof Polybond)". I was hesitant which colour to match the Strap Pad with this (Stone_1920, Waxed Canvas) Hudson Laptop Briefcase. I played the safest rule, picking a Black (easiest-to-pair-with colour) one. And as expected, it "blended" with the black (removable) strap of the bag. I strongly suggest buying a Strap Pad especially if you carry it over your shoulder often. My stuff weigh a tons, probably 3kg excluding the bag, and so Strap Pad is a must-have!!

    3) Because the Briefcase can be "split into half", the hook for the (removable) strap is built onto the other half of bag. As a result, it went kind of off balance (if you get what I mean). It take time to get used to, not a big issue for me. Overall the strap is still centrally positioned.

    4) The "leather portion", it is black colour for my case, when the bag first came, I noticed the "back" of the leather is "greenish" in colour. I thought it was mold (??), but doesn't smell like one. But I gets particular about colour matching. My bag is stone grey overall, with black leather, and some parts look greenish (wth?). Anyway, it is not very visible. You will only notice it if you look at the "back" of the handle grip.

    5) The zip is big, and "tough". It needs some effort to unzip the bag. I hope that "toughness" translates to "durability" and quality of the zip.

Overall, I like it and I am likely to recommend it. It is expensive, yes I feel so, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. But the design, the number of compartments, it suits the style of a Young Adult.

I can't comment on the quality, but it has not break down on me yet. :)

    Comments about Hudson Laptop Briefcase:

The product is one of many bags I have purchased from Timbuk2. This product's layout is great but the handle construction failed after one day. I called Timbuk2 and they are aware of the faulty design and plan to replace this bag in February once the improved version arrives. I am surprised they are still selling it since they are aware these bages will not hold up well.

Use this briefcase every day for work. Keeps my PC laptop, two work phones, tablet and other personal items well organized and protected. The internal organization is smartly laid out and has ample space for all of my tech gear including power supply, extra network cables and a small amount of paperwork. Even has a handy key storage and retrieval system.

Great bag for professional use where a traditional timbuk2 messenger just won't cut it any more. One of the most attractive bags in the leather/canvas briefcase genre with the quality and durability timbuk2' is famous for. That said, the capacity and carrying comfort is a definite step down from a messenger bag or backpack. Plus my original hudson bled leather dye all over my clothes. Timbuk2 was great in sending me a new bag right away .

        Comments about Hudson Laptop Briefcase:

I needed a bag to carry my 13" MacBook Pro retina (very thin) and iPad. I wanted something that looked nicer than my backpack and could be carried like a messenger bag. Overall, this is a nice bag for the basics but there are a number of things that could have been done better:

        1. There's no pen pocket in the front flap pocket. Everything is just loose. Annoyingly unorganized. There's a long strap for keys that just gets in the way and tangled up.

        2. The front flap has two snaps. Strong magnets or even Velcro would have been easier and more secure (already dumped it once thinking the snaps were snapped)

        3. The pen pockets in the zip area are deep and too narrow. Easy to loose them down there and hard to get out with big fingers like mine.

        4. The pockets are too small for the smallest of portable hard drive and there's no front area for ids or business cards.

        5. The zippers seem heavy-duty but feel a bit rough.

        6. Additional leather trim would have made it look better than the canvas. Still nicer looking than the standard black nylon bags.

Overall, it's an ok bag but doesn't live up to my expectations. Not totally disappointed but certainly not wowed.

        Comments about Hudson Laptop Briefcase:

        Overview:
This is a fantastic laptop briefcase. It has some trade-offs that are useful to be aware of, but if you decide that these are OK for you, you'll be happy with your purchase.

        Use:
I'm an MBA student and entrepreneur. I use this bag to transport my laptop and other essentials between my city apartment, campus, and meetings. Most of these events occur within 5 miles of each other and I bike to all of the above most of the summer, but end up driving for the cooler 3/4 of the year. On biking days where I don't need my computer or if I ONLY need my computer, I'll use a Timbuk2 messenger bag. Otherwise, I'll use my Hudson. This means that I'll use it by bike and by car.

By bike, the Hudson isn't all that great, but it's better than using a non-laptop messenger bag. The Hudson obviously isn't made for biking and I accepted that this was not the intended use of the bag, but if you need to throw it over your shoulder and hop on your bike for a few miles, it will get the job done. My biggest issue with using this bag on the bike is that the metal snap on the back of the bag (for attaching to the handle of your luggage) is located exactly in the center. When I sling this bag over my shoulder and lean forward on my bike, this snap rests directly on my spine. You'll need to offset the bag to the left or right a bit to make it comfortable, so it's just a bit out of balance. Also of note on the bike, if you want to take the strap off when you arrive to go briefcase style, there isn't a good spot for it. This is one of the two needed pockets that just isn't there.

By car, this thing is great. The leather handles are incredibly supple on the hands and very comfortable. The design of the bag is classy. The slim profile hurts the capacity a bit, but you really get the style benefit here. The bag is decidedly more briefcase than duffle bag and isn't clumsy. Easy for getting in and out of cars and crowded elevators.

        Pockets:
Pockets, let's talk about that for a second. The Hudson has three main pockets. The first is zippered all the way around (which rocks) and holds your laptop, charger power brick, and iPad. That pocket is nearly perfect in its entirety. I will note that if you're laptop is 15 inches AND pretty thick, this bag just may not be big enough for you. With a slim 15" laptop, this compartment is perfect. The second compartment is the main compartment. The zipper goes completely around the top 1/3 or so of the bag. This compartment isn't as big as you would like. It fits a textbook and a notepad. It will take a bit more in a pinch and I sometimes stuff a raincoat in, but any additions of this nature make the bag look overstuffed. There are also 4 pockets on the wall of this compartment and a zippered pocket as well. Those are all great, but I need one more. I keep an umbrella, pens, pencils, and reserve a pocket for sunglasses here. The zippered pocket takes my phone, wallet, and earbuds. This leaves me without a critical pocket for my computer mouse, something that seems like a significant oversight for a laptop bag. The mouse fits in the wall pockets, but then the umbrella or my sunglasses are left to the abuses of the main compartment. That's the other pocket that I need, one for the mouse. The third main compartment is a snap closure pocket on the front of the bag. I fill this pocket with keys (with key clip lanyard), a pack of gum, a mid sized bike "U" lock, and bike lights. No complaints there, that pocket is great

        Materials:
Everything on the Hudson is made from very high quality materials. The leather is incredibly soft and supple. The waxed canvas is durable and the liner material is soft. This bag gets a very refined feel from the materials used. I have been on my bike for 2 unexpected "soakers" and though the exterior of the bag seemed wetted-out, the contents of the bag remained dry. The riveted attachment points for the handles and straps seem bomb-proof and I don't anticipate any failures in the material in the near future. The snaps can be a little tricky to close on the go, but with a bit of practice, you'll develop a technique and this probably won't be a long term issue for you. There have been a lot of negative comments in the reviews about the zippers, which I would like to debunk. The zippers on this bag are fantastic. They are stout metal zippers and take a little time to break in before they achieve a buttery operation, but they get better with time and use. I have used this bag hard for about 6 months now and I think that others who reviewed them as "sharp" or "edgy" feeling just haven't used them enough yet.

Overall, this bag achieves near perfection for what I believe to be its intended use. It is made to be a high quality, classy bag for business applications. It is highly functional and can even be slung over your shoulder for people on the go. It's not a gym locker and it won't take much along that isn't business related, but it will do it in style. It's missing 2 pockets, but you'll be very happy with its performance.

          Comments about Hudson Laptop Briefcase:

I own three Timbuk2 back packs and two messengers, and they are all tough as nails. The oldest one has carried heavy loads for close to a decade, and not a sign of wear. So, when I saw this bag with what I think is a very cool, professional design, I knew it would be perfect for work commuting. And it is! The design of the compartments (separate, custom sized and padded for a MacBook Pro 15" or smaller and large or small iPad, plus separate compartments for all your other stuff, plus, lots of pockets and zippered enclosure for all the little things... So well thought out. As long as I don't need to carry something BIG, I've always found this thing organized, secure, and really good protective padding.

I had a classic messenger bag for almost 7 years. When I finally upgraded to a more professional looking bag I was excited with the distilled collection briefcase. I like everything about it but the capacity. The main compartment needs to be 2-3 inches wider to accommodate all my stuff. Other than that I'm really enjoying it.

This is my first briefcase style bag and I did a lot of research, and this definitely meets my expectations and advertisement. It fits well with business attire as well as casual attire, and it was thoughtfully designed. All aspects of the bag are useful and the TSA approved computer compartment works as advertised. I have not had any problems with the TSA at several different airports. The main compartment could be slightly bigger for air travel to accommodate the usual business stuff plus headphones and a bottle of water--not a complaint, just a suggestion.
