What's this all about?

Barked for and drooled on by puppies (and some unfortunate felines) around the world, our new and improved Muttmover Backpack is a must-have for any small, self respecting pooch. Our original pooch pack was good, but this Muttmover is much better. A new silhouette designed for greater stability and pooch-in/pooch-out ease, the Muttmover Backpack's front panel zips open to lay flat so Spike can easily step inside, and its printed waterproof liner is easy to wipe down when you-know-who can't hold it. Custom fit straps evenly distribute the weight of your pup and a ventilated back panel keeps you cool. Finally, an on-strap bottle opener and stealth, foldable water bowl, mean you no longer have to rely on the kindness of strangers. Oww owww!

Comments about Muttmover Backpack:

FARP! We named our MuttMover2 "Pocket's FARP" based on the online description containing this fun little acronym. I was unsure as to what FARP stood for, but did not feel it necessary to really find out… until my coworkers made such a stink I decided to look it up. Well, consider 'stink' a pun-intended and only google FARP if your IT department does not have too heavy of a flagging system installed. So, after learning what UrbanDictionary defines as a FARP, I simply had to call Timbuk2 and clarify a few things. The fact that the MuttMover 2 is not green, or heaven forbid a brown, is reassuring if referencing UD's definition, but after speaking with Antonio, it is simply the kind of material used. Therefore, I agree with other reviewers in that it would be wonderful if it came in something other than the dark grey/black combo.
Pocket is an Italian Greyhound and on the smaller spectrum for the breed. She weighs in at a whopping nine pounds, is 15 inches from chest to tail, 18 inches from toe to top of head, and has an attitude the equivalent of a sassy hyena. She fits well in the FARP and has room to turn around, albeit awkwardly, and to lie down.
As for the FARP itself, the shoulder straps are nice and wide and have a touch of padding which helps on the longer hikes or rides. The chest clip can move up or down on the straps which we find super helpful as we swap out whom is carrying it. While I can see where the dual water pocket would be nice, it is actually not that big of a downside. We purchased one of the bag-bottles that collapses flat when empty, yet retains that envelope shape when full, and it fits just fine in the larger pocket on the back. The two window flaps secure nicely to the inside wall of the FARP when unzipped via Velcro (soft side on the back of the FARP, rougher side on the window itself). I believed Pocket would enjoy a removable pad of some sort though. The easy-clean material is nice, however a simple fleece or shearling pad that can be placed in the bottom would be a nice addition over the travel bowl. We went ahead and purchased a larger crate pad from one of the 'big box pet stores' and laid it in the bottom in the shape of a 'U' so it has soft sides for her to snuggle up to during the colder month hikes that are quickly approaching us here in AK. A wider dog may not have the additional room for this sort of pad though…
The clip on the inside that attaches to either a collar or harness is something we have never used. It is nice that the clasp has a bit of metal to it for stability but the clip as a whole is just so darn big. Perhaps a smaller all-metal clip can be added to the MuttMover 3 version?
We have received many compliments on the FARP and I highly recommend it to those in need of an efficient way to transport your pooch, or titten, from point A to B and back... or to the local brewery!

Comments about Muttmover Backpack:

Love the idea of this for taking my dog with me on my cycling adventures. However, if your dog is larger than a six pound Chihuahua it may not work well. My pooch barely fits and she is only six pounds and quite small. The width is not very accommodating. Maybe a long legged, short body, lightweight dog would fit? I do not think a 20 pounder, as listed in the item's description, would fit. It does work for us and we are happy with it. Just wanted to let others know.

Works For Us

Cons

  • No Hip Strap

Best Uses

Comments about Muttmover Backpack:

I bought the Muttmover so I could commute to work by Scooter on the days I needed to take my dog to work with me.

Zeus is a 10 lb Chihuahua-Sheltie mix that has never been in any type of carrier before since he hates not being able to see me or everyone else and needs to stick his head out.

So this was the perfect combination of what I and he needed in a pet carrier, and the only one out there like it.

It's a bit narrower than I originally thought. But while Zeus is long he's also skinny so it fits him perfectly, and he can turn around to face the other hole once inside.

Not sure yet if he can/will curl up and lay down but when the breeze gets too much for him he can stick his head back in.

With the hole for him on the sides of the bag I can see him in the side mirrors and check on how he's doing. (and also check if he's taken his doggles off, which protect his bug eyes while riding)

Now while it does work for us there are some cons:

It could really really use a hip strap for comfort, I can't imagine wearing this while walking.

The side hole are a bit too big for Zeus, who (even while strapped to the the internal leash strap at its shortest) can jump fully out the window
(Luckily he hasn't attempted this while I'm wearing the backpack, just once its on the ground)

I had to shorten the internal strap leash

More comfy padding on the shoulder straps would be great.

You can't utilize the water bottle holder if you want to use the higher of the two windows as it would block their face.

All in all, so far it works for what his Size/Shape, and both of our Needs.

      Comments about Muttmover Backpack:

We have two bags for the dog and they're both bag carrier types that have a shoulder strap. I usually have to carry the bag by hand or sling over the shoulder. Both options get uncomfortable for both me and the dog. This is the first backpack option we've tried that is made by a reputable manufacturer.

The bag feels sturdy and our pooch looks secure in the bag. There's a clip inside the bag you can use to hook the collar to so that the dog can't jump out. We hooked to her harness since she did try to (and was able to) jump out. Our dog is 12 lbs.

I have a 20 pound Shiba Inu. She fits into this backpack perfectly. Any bigger and she would be too big for it, though. I have ridden many miles with her on my back both on my bicycle and my vespa. It holds up well and it is super comfortable.

        Comments about Muttmover Backpack:

I bought this bag to tote my 15lb min pin x and a few dog supplies in when I'm taking my other dogs places she won't be able to make on her own. The bag intself looks great and is obviously well constructed, easy to clean and the collar clasp and built in water dish are very convenient accessories. I like the fact that it has a chest strap for added stability, but I wish it had a hip belt to more evenly distribute the weight as I find it quite uncomfortable for more than a few kilometers of walking. I wish the water bottle pocket was on the back because as it is now it covers the opening for my dogs head. As for the opening itself, I find it a bit too large as my dog can fit her whole body through it when she sees something she wants to chase after, like a squirrel. I would appreciate a few more pockets, especially some bigger ones to fit more things since I can't exactly put anything in the bag with her. I also wish it had clips inside instead of velcro as the velcro snags my dogs halter and clothing and gets filled with hair. The bag itself is beautiful and definitely an attention grabber. If this bag came in a few more colours and a smaller price tag I'd definitely purchase another, but as is it almost cost me $200 CDN after shipping, taxes and duty. Overall a great bag and the only one of its' kind.

We owned the original Muttmover and the new upgrade fixes everything we could want for the original. Charlie, our dog, couldn't get himself into the original Muttmover, but this one with the new zip down front made it perfectly load-able for him. He knew exactly what to do when we zipped it down. And the zip open windows on the side are at different heights which he loves because one size is great for him to stand and one to lay down. We love the fold out bowl because and the water bottle pocket, keeps him hydrated on the go. Greta job timbuk2!!

I have a 7 yeah old bischon-shihtzu mix who has had two acl surgeries and has arthritis. We also have a pitbull mix so when I take them for walks, my little one walks as far as she can go then hops in the backpack for the rest of the time. She is 14-15lbs and fits perfectly. She sits comfortably, watching out the "window" pocket! We also have a stroller for her but it is bulkier and cannot Go on all terrains. I wanted something that would be easy and comfortable to take everywhere. I searched for hours online looking for something comfortable for her and me, that would have enough room for her, and looked appealing. This backpack is perfect!! Exceeded expectations!

It is way too big and uncomfortable to wear. I'm about 5'5" and my dog is a toy poodle weighing only 4.5 lbs, so the top part of the bag towered over him and above my shoulders. Had to return it.
So we're back to using the old model of the Muttmover (discontinued), which is the other extreme... too small. Maybe the next model will be "just right"?

A definite improvement over the first Muttmover is all the extra pockets.
