Comments about Race Cycling Duffel Bag:

I bought this bag to commute to bike races and it has worked great for that purpose. Unfortunately the backpack straps constantly fall out of place and it can be awkward to readjust while on the move. As a result I decided to attach flat locking carabiners on each backpack strap above the existing metal hooks. This has resolved the problem, while still allowing the straps to be folded away when not in use.

Comments about Race Cycling Duffel Bag:

I have had the small version of this bag for over a year. I use it as luggage. I can fit enough clothes and toiletries for about 3-4 days. I wear size 12 shoes. I cannot fit a pair of my shoes in the side pockets. I usually put my shoes, with my laptop, in a different Timbuk2 bag

This bag is also a very adequate gym bag.

I tried to use the bag as a backpack for cycling gear. Anything in the bag sat awkwardly and uncomfortably on my back. The straps are so close at the top of the bag, they basically pinched my neck and traps. The bottom clips never stayed secure. So I took the straps off and stopped trying to use this bag as a back pack.

The material quality is great. The bag is very well made. This bag is very useful as casual, no frills luggage. If you want a high capacity backpack from Timbuk2, then buy a high capacity backpack from Timbuk2.

Good for everyday cycling related workouts - in the gym or outdoor training. General great functional features. Wish it had cross-shoulder carry in design and water bottle pockets had larger circumference.

Comments about Race Cycling Duffel Bag:

We bought this bag to be used as a gym bag. It seemed that Medium would be good but it is quite large. Small would have been better for this pupose. We'll keep this bag as it will be great for travel and will order a small one for the gym.

Poor execution - style over substance

Comments about Race Cycling Duffel Bag:

I needed a weekend travel bag, and since I like to have my hands free, I tend to opt for versatile backpacks. I liked the on-paper specs of this bag, and I've been buying Timbuk2 gear since 1992. But wow, what a disappointment. As other reviewers have said, the backpack straps are as close to useless as any backpack ever conceived -- indeed, it's the backpack that continuously resists being used as a backpack! There's NOTHING keeping the open hooks connected to the loops, so they fall off even while attempting to put the bag on your back; worse, once you've managed to successfully, and somewhat miraculously, place the bag on your back, the adjustment customization is so poor that the bag sags down, to the point where one has to lean forward like a rickshaw operator in order to even walk, as the bag distends below your backside (this is a large bag, and if it's full-ish, it stands to reason that the contents will weigh more than a few ounces, which will in turn make gravity do its thing)...I'm 6'0" and I still had this problem. Next, there's no structural stiffness to the bag at all, so anything weighing more than a few ounces immediately tries to plunge groundward when in backpack mode. I was carrying a bunch of clothes on a trip, along with a small camera bag (just the camera, no additional lenses or accessories), and this duffel sagged so badly where the camera bag was inside that it became ungainly and lopsided, no matter how often i stopped to re-organize the bag and its contents during my journey -- this was after I gave up attempting to use as a backpack because one or both straps just wouldn't stay in place, to the point where it became a joke. And everyone loves unwieldy, ungainly bags -- where one side of the bag is flopping towards the floor as though it's trying to divorce itself from the rest of the bag -- when they're dealing with a harrowing bus-trip commute, right? The only conceivable use this bag has is if someone is ONLY carrying clothes and maybe a pair of shoes, or any other light material where all of the contents are more or less of a uniform weight; I guess it could be potentially useful for commuting to the local laundromat, for the fancier public laundromat users among us. But even then, the bag remains completely untenable as a backpack due to the mind-bogglingly bad design of the straps (I had to constantly ask my traveling companion to hook the wayward strap onto it's loop, until I finally just said screw this...all the while brooding about how bad a decision i'd made in buying this bag; and in keeping with the apparent lack of thought that went into its design, when not in backpack mode, there's NO PLACE to store the backpack straps! the only "solution" is to stuff the straps into one of the side pockets -- talk about half-baked solutions). This bag now sits on the floor of my closet as a sort of storage unit (rather than return it immediately, I engaged in a sort of denial that I'd somehow find a use for it, or that its merits would somehow reveal themselves to me...alas after over a year of ownership, it's as much of a lemon now as it was then). That said, for those who value how something looks as opposed to how it actually functions, then this may be a worthwhile purchase in terms of visual aesthetics.

Packing for weekend trips with my wife. Packing for a bike commute home from work (helmet, shoes, gear, everything). Anything where I need to separate dirty shoes from clean gear from sweaty clothes. I opened it up and we all agreed we could almost fit my 19 year old daughter in the bag (maybe we could smuggle her somewhere :)).
