What's this all about?

These two super-durable saddlebag pannier bags magically transform into a single shoulder bag. Thanks to built-in magnets, all traces of pannier-ness disappear, when two halves become one. A 15 laptop pocket makes every commute a beauty. And while we can't say it's "waterproof" because you can't submerge it in a pool, its fabric-backed tarpaulin fabric makes it super duper water resistant.

Comments about Tandem Pannier Bag:

I am carefully reading the comments and especially agree with the comments

"Could Use Some Improvement" and "The All-around Town Bag."

When I was a teenager I had an AYH double pannier (we called them saddlebags back then) and it fit easily on and off the "rat-trap" (rack). It fit over the rack, and the "trap" part, a spring operated wire clamp that would usually be for a sweatshirt, fit in a slot in the connecting piece of the saddlebags. It was made of grey canvas and had leather straps and buckles plus some outside buckled pockets in addition to the main pockets. The inside was rubberized so it was waterproof if it rained. A real workhorse.

When I took it off the rat-trap--a cinch, really, I carried it by putting my hand inside the slot in the connecting piece, or draping it over my arm with the pouches dangling down on both sides. It was simple and practical.

Today it would be really nice to have a similar design, combined with the Timbuk2 magnets, which are really cool, and straps, which would be good also. I would like to see the side-to-side dimension longer to make it a little slimmer and comfortably hold a lap-top. If one side had a laptop sleeve, the other could be divided in half lengthwise to keep notebooks or legal-sized files neat. That the whole thing could be as easily removed as yours is now and become a messenger is great.

The beauty of pannier or saddlebags is that the weight is distributed low--better for the back and less top-heavy. This is why Timbuk2 should refine the current designs. None of them are really perfect.

I would also like to see another color for the tandem pannier than just black--grey with pink or aqua inside or blue with yellow or bright green or tan with orange inside would be good. Having the inside liner of the bag be a bright color makes things much easier to find. Like keys! Outside pockets that zipped would be useful as well--big enough to hold snacks like an orange or banana or trail bars or a bike lock, as well as wallet and keys.

I feel that this is a work in progress, but you could make it better, and I will be checking back to see if the tandem pannier is being improved. Then, I might open my wallet for it!

I do not recommend it yet, but if you work on the design, I might be enthusiastic in my recommendation! Back to the drawing board--keep the best parts of the concept and improve the others and you will have a winner.

      Comments about Tandem Pannier Bag:

I feel as good taking this on my bike to get my groceries for the week as I do taking it on a plane with me. Strapping it to the bike is easy enough. Pushing it into an overhead bin on a plane is just as easy. It's nice that it has those magnets to attach the two bags to one another. I love using this as part of my travel luggage on short trips so that I don't have to check things to retrieve at baggage claim.

I put these Panniers on my new Specialized CrossTrail and they work great. Fit the rack perfectly, very well made, completely waterproof. Amazing. 'Ive been a cyclist for 30 years and these are better than any bags I've ever had. These bags make me want to do more trips because they are so useful.

Looks smart and professional in an office environment. Loads of room for waterproofs, lunch, laptop, etc. Excellent panniers.

                Comments about Tandem Pannier Bag:

I started bike commuting to work and use this for my laptop and just about everything else. I love how it collapses together so that I can carry it like a mrssenger bag when off the bike. It can be a tad cumbersome to affix the Velcro bottom side straps to the rack, as my hands sometimes get bike grease on them when attaching or removing them, and they seem to be getting a little frayed after heavy use for he past six months....a design upgrade here would make this a five star review. Overall this bag is exactly what I wanted, and I haven't seen anything else that comes close.

                  Comments about Tandem Pannier Bag:

I have used this bag to bike to and from work and on the weekends for about a year and a half, and I love it! It is easy to load and get on the bike, and since it is double-sided it doesn't stress out my bike rack the same way that other panniers have. It also is fairly water-resistant (not proof), so even in light rain or mud it protects my precious laptop. The only complaint that I have is that the hooks that attach the bag to the bottom of the rack have either bent or come off on mine, so they could be a little more sturdy. Other than that though, this has been my favorite Timbuk2 purchase!

                  Comments about Tandem Pannier Bag:

This is a really nice bag. Obviously high quality. If the following changes were made it would be far better (the ultimate) pannier/commuter bag.

Make it longer (by longer I mean when you look directly at the big clip on side, from left to right its wider) so it can hold the same total volume or more, but not be so fat and bulky when its in carry/messenger bag mode.
Along these same lines, when its got a lot of stuff in it and you try to bike with it on your back as you would a normal messenger bag, its very unwieldy and slides off your back because its so fat and narrow. That same amount of stuff in a messenger bag would be totally fine to carry bc messenger bag is longer.

Also add a small easy access pocket on the outside or top somewhere for keys/cellphone/wallet. Its a pain to have to open the huge clip then the heavy duty velcro on the big bags, then fish around in the big pocket for a small item. I end up using the laptop pocket for small items but its not the best.

If the above changes were made this would be a fantastic bag for my purposes - year round bike commute to work in the city, pack lunch, shoes, clothes, and have enough room to occasionally pack some other stuff or extra clothes. I have previously been using a backpack, but having the weight where panniers go is much better for center of gravity, plus sweat purposes. Traditional panniers however must be left on the bike, so I'd have to put some other type of bag in the pannier then take that bag out once i'm going into work. This is why this timbuk2 messenger is great. Its mind boggling to me however that with all the work and money that goes into the product, you did not include the 2 features I mentioned above, as they would improve this bag so drastically much. I hope you do make another version like i describe so I can buy it.

                  Comments about Tandem Pannier Bag:

I absolutely cherish this bag. For one its the first time in my life that some one reading my browser history was good for me. This was a gift that I did not expect.
It works well on my bike and over my shoulder.
Road grime wipes off with ease so it does not look nasty when you take it in with you.
The velcro straps that it uses to attach to the rack do worry me. I actually waited to write this review for a month and a half just wanting to see how they held up. So far no problems
As for seam leaks I haven't been stuck in the rain for to many miles to notice a problem but I can see that the seam aren't reinforced the same as my other Timbuk2 bags. I have had a few wet rides and everything stayed dry.

Seeing other colors more sizes would be great. As for organizers and dividers I wouldn't mind them but it would not make it that much better for me. I tend to use organizer bags for most things including a sleeve for my MacBook Pro. Padding for the bag would help. especially so I don't have to carry the sleeve for my computer.
