Pubs
Seattle
Pubs first picked up a spray can in the fifth grade while attending a strict Catholic school where the nuns would give students the "beat down" for not tucking in their shirts. He and his friends used to sneak spray cans inside their packs to school and afterwards they would head out to the "underground", a nearby underpass, where they honed their craft. Pubs grew up in gritty East Tacoma, which continues to inspire him to create art that "everyday people can experience."He's one of the only friends from his original neighborhood to go to college. Pubs attended the Art Institute of Seattle where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. He lists artists: Doze Green, Keith Haring, Jasper Johns, and Andy Abero as primary influences.
Stylistically: Asian, Native American, Art Deco, Victorian Ornament, and Russian Constructivism all find ways into his work. He's not bashful about dabbling in other art forms such as sewing, photography, architecture, and fashion to find inspiration for his pieces either. Pubs expresses it best himself, "I am an artist who is always experimenting and following different creative paths. I have a life-long history as an artist. I not only have a strong connection to graffiti and urban street art but I'm also inspired to create fine and graphic/commercial art as a way to make a living with my talents." Currently, Pubs mixes his urban art experience with graphic design as the Art Director and Lead Designer for evo, a Seattle-based retail outfit promoting the collaboration between art, fashion, and culture with sports like skiing, snowboarding, and skateboarding.
