Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

I use this backpack for grad school. The separate computer pocket is wonderful and very comfortable. The backpack doesn'the stick out very far, but easily holds gym clothes, lunch, my computer, etc. I love this bag!

Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

Love the look, and the TSA-friendliness. But, it was SO uncomfortable when I tried it on my back -- the stiff pads of the straps dug into the base of my neck. Not sure how anyone could really wear it. One thing I liked about it was the padding, but it just needs to be lower or set farther apart...or something!? Also, I thought I could live without having 2 water bottle holders (one on each side), and a storage unit for my sunglasses like my existing laptop-backpack does. But alas, I realized that those things are important to me. I hope they'll be included in a redesign...along with some fix for the shoulder pad problem. I love my other Timbuk2 products though!

Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

This bag is just as advertised with respect to its features. The quality is beyond expectation.

I've only used it for a week so far but I find it very comfortable. The pockets are useful. My only criticism is that the bottle pocket on the side is not deep enough to securely hold most bottles (hence the missing star) Though, from what I've seen this is common.

My next flight isn't for a couple weeks yet but I can see this being quite convenient. The TSA compliant flip down pocket is large without being bulky. The straps flip out of the way of the laptop pocket much more easily than I imagined.

The quality is far beyond what I thought. It feels very durable, something real important to me as I don't travel light and I purchased this only because I had complety worn out my last bag.

      Highly recommended

      TSA-Friendly, NOT Computer-Friendly

Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

If you value your computer, DON'T BUY THIS BAG!

While I appreciate the attempt to design an easily-accessible computer sleeve into this bag, it is insufficient to protect something as valuable as the MacBook Air my company allows me to use. If the zipper is not closed and the velcro strap not in place, the laptop will fly out of the bag and across the room when you throw the backpack over your shoulder. You might wonder, who would be stupid enough not to close the zipper?

Well, I've done it twice and I can't be the only one. Think about it. If you throw the backpack over your left shoulder with that backpack zipper open, physics is not your friend! The bag will stop when it hits your back and the computer will continue its motion out of the bag and across the room. Flying computers and cement floors are not a good match!

If the sleeve opened at the top and had a similar velcro enclosure, this would not be a problem.

I HAVE CALLED TIMBUK2 AND DISCUSSED THIS ISSUE WITH A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AND MY DESIGN CONCERNS WERE BRUSHED ASIDE.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not some newbie Timbuk2 user. I'm a big fan of Timbuk2. I still have my first design-your-own messenger bag from 20+ years ago, another messenger bag, suitcase and cycling accessories.

But this design is too cute by half, and that makes it a bad design. I have attached pics of my damaged MacBook Air to accompany this cautionary tale.

I recently had a surgery and the doctors said I couldn't carry more than 20 lbs whe recovering. I had to travel for workshop and needed a simple carry on bag to pack all my stuff. I managed to pack 3 days of clothes (Eagle Creek compact envelope helped compress clothes), toiletries, mug, laptop, kindle. The bag fit under the seat and I was able to deplane without a hitch.

I wish I could return this bag, but school had already started and I needed something fast. It's heavy and bulky; even with adjustments, the straps are configured so that they bite into my neck (it almost feels like someone grabbing my neck from the back--and I'm not a big person). The zippers are poor quality and sticky, and you have to turn the straps inside out in order to open the laptop compartment. Least important, but worth mentioning: the blue bag is a lot darker IRL than in the picture. Sad that I wasted a lot of money on this bag.

Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

I bought the Uptown for my wife and myself and this is our first Timbuk2 purchase.

We live in Hong Kong where we can't throw our bag into a car (public transport is too convenient), so everything I use is in my bag.

I was using a Kathmandu bag before which are pretty good too, but when I switched to the Uptown, I was very pleased.

It feels very compact yet it fits everything I had in my old backpack. The Uptown even feels lighter with the same amount of load. I think partially it's because of the dedicated pockets for the laptop and ipad which I carry around every day. Very nicely designed and constructed.

I also love the TSA-friendly design since we travel as well and I hate fumbling around to take my laptop and ipad out for security.

I haven't used it long enough to comment on the durability but I hope it lasts long, because I love using it.

If there is any "improvement" it's as some people have mentioned before, having an additional bottle pocket on the other side would be nice and a keychain holder but these aren't deal breakers.

Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

I really want to love this bag, but every day I wish it had another water bottle pocket on the other side for quick access to my phone or sunglasses. It is deceptively roomy, feels very durable, has plenty of room for a MacBook Pro 15" and lots more. Great for a carry on bag. But I really want another outside pocket.

Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

I bought this for a work trip to Rwanda a year ago (I worked for a nonprofit organization at the time) and the bag traveled well and held up very well! Since then it's been on several plane trips and most recently Ethiopia. It doesn't show hardly any signs of wear.

My only complaint is that because of the larger size you can pack it heavy and the straps are not the most comfortable if you really load it down. It can also be harder to fit underneath an airplane seat fully loaded but it can be done!

Comments about Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack:

I can't believe I didn't buy this bag months ago. I was sure that this bag wouldn't be large enough to fit all the stuff I tote around (I commute to and from campus on the daily with books, a laptop, and a lunch), but I was totally wrong. I also ended up taking this bag on a four day trip to San Francisco, and it held all my clothes and toiletries with room to spare.
Additionally, I really like that the laptop compartment is separate from the rest of the bag; my water bottle (the water bottle side pocket is another plus) ended up leaking into the largest zip compartment at one point, but the padded laptop sleeve kept my Macbook completely dry.
All in all, I fricking love this bag. Thanks, Timbuk2, you're the realest.
