poptech

Timbuk2 & Pop!Tech

Scarcity and abundance are all around us; the last thing you need is another not-that-sweet conference bag. So Timbuk2 and Pop!Tech teamed up to create a bag for the 2008 Pop!Tech conference that utilized a scarcity of materials and an abundance of wisdom.

It’s Vintage

Developing a new fabric for the Pop!Tech bag did cross our minds, but we chose to dig deep (literally) in our SF factory. These bags are made from discontinued and excess fabrics, old cams, and recycled buckles. Vintage is so much better than new.

It’s Deep

Before this bag went to production, Pop!Tech asked their 650 conference attendees for advice, in 7 words or less, they’d like to give to the leaders of tomorrow. We printed their advice on the liner of the Pop!Tech bags. So whether these bags are filled with U-locks or USB sticks, it’ll always be full of meaning.

Give One, Get One at Pop!Tech

Let’s be honest, do you really need another bag? Pop!Tech and Timbuk2 get it, so we developed a bag up-cycling program. Pop!Tech attendees were asked to donate their new Pop!Tech bags to Peace Games, a non-profit that teaches students how to be peacemakers in their schools and communities. Peace Games then distributed the donated bags to their students and volunteers. While bags can’t exactly create world peace, kids need bags for school and we all could use a few words of wisdom. Pop!Tech attendees were also asked to donate their old conference bags; Timbuk2 sent the old conference bags to a textiles recycling plant where all materials were reworked for new manufacturing projects.

Up-Cycling. Give it Back, Pay It Forward at Timbuk2

Inspired by Pop!Tech, Timbuk2 has kicked off a permanent bag up-cycling program. So whether you’ve loved your Timbuk2 bag to death or you’re simply ready for some new digs, we’ll up-cycle the bag for you. Send us your overly-loved bag and we’ll find it a new home through one of our non-profit partners.

Pop!Tech is a one-of-a-kind conference, community, and ongoing conversation about science, technology and the future of ideas. Pop!Tech partnered with Timbuk2 to align this year’s conference bag with the theme of scarcity and abundance.     poptech.org

Peace Games is an innovative violence prevention program that teaches children, as young as four years old, the skills they need to create safe schools and communities. Peace Games empowers students to create their own safe classrooms and communities by forming partnerships with schools, families, young adult volunteers and community partners.     peacegames.org

Timbuk2 Commute Bag vs. Motorcycle

Thank you, Timbuk2!

My Timbuk2 Commute bag saved me a fortune today. I was riding home, on my motorcycle, via I-65 North with my Timbuk2 bag loaded down with my Apple 15″ powerbook, various papers and books, and my Nikon Digital camera. I had my Timbuk2 bag strapped on the back of the bike and was speeding up the interstate. Little did I know what was about to take place. I reached back to check on my Timbuk2 bag and knocked it loose from the strap that was holding it on the back of the bike. Next thing I know my Timbuk2 bag has fallen off the back, hit the back tire (traveling at 80mph) and wedged itself between the rear tire and the fender. The back tire locks up and I begin sliding and slowing in the middle lane of a busy interstate. Well I go into half panic mode and try not to lose control and wreck. After quite a bit of praying and maneuvering I was able to get over to the shoulder. At this point I was in full panic mode, I was freaked out by the rear tire locking up on the interstate, but I was most worried about the contents of my Timbuk2 bag. I decided to try to wrestle the bag out from between the rear wheel and fender. I was expecting to find a gooey melted plastic mess that was once my laptop, digital camera, and Timbuk2 bag. After much cursing and a lot of effort I was able to free the bag from the rear tire. Next began the gut wrenching exercise of opening the bag and examining the damage. I unbuckled the lower clips and opened the waterproof velcro flap. I half squeamishly peered inside to check the damage, but was amazingly surprised. Not a single thing that my Timbuk2 bag was carrying was damaged or melted. I was worried that my Apple powerbook would have a broken screen or worse. I was so ecstatic about the whole thing that I did a little jig right there on the side of the interstate. The only thing damaged in the incident was the rear fender of the bike and the Timbuk2 bag. I don’t think any other bag would have survived that kind of torture and abuse. This is my first Timbuk2 bag and will certainly not be my last. I will be retiring my Timbuk2 Commute, to a less adventurous role, once I get another replacement Thank you very much Timbuk2 for designing a product that is stylish, functional, and rugged.

Background: I am a Systems Administrator for Auburn University in Alabama. I have been riding motorcycles for 3 years and have ridden throughout the United States. My Commute bag has been my the answer to my prayers. With all the stuff I carry around on campus being a systems administrator coupled with the fact that I ride a motorcycle makes Timbuk2 the perfect choice for my needs. I have carried everything from network switches, wireless access points, network cabling to deskjet printers. My Timbuk2 Commute is the most versatile bag I have ever owned.

Fire!

CarFire

I’m amazed to say that my Timbuk2 bag can withstand 8 foot flames. I know this firsthand because my car caught fire while my Timbuk2 bag was in the backseat. (Luckily, I was safely inside the house.) The fire department sprayed foam all over the car and put out the fire. When they found my Timbuk2 bag, they hosed it off too. It survived and so did the contents.

Just wanted to let you know you make one tough bag. Thanks!

Penguins

penguins

In Antarctica, when you’re wearing a thick, puffy jacket to keep warm, it’s tough to toss a backpack on. Even tougher to take it on and off when you see a breathtaking photo opportunity. With my Timbuk2 bag, I just spin it around front, whip out the camera, get my shot and spin it back around. Here’s one of some penguins checking out my handsome bag.

A waterproof carry-all comes in handy when you’re an oceanographer. That’s why I love my Timbuk2.

Goose Versus Timbuk2

Hello Timbuk2,

I’ve found another reason to love my Timbuk2 bag(s): It saved me from a nasty crash on my bike when I was hit by a flying Canada goose.

No lie!

Amy

I was riding home from work not long ago and I was actually lamenting how full I’d filled my bag…laptop, shoes, clothes, etc. I was weighed down pretty heavily and was pondering how to smarten up my act when, riding along the water in Pacific Grove, on the bike path, I noticed from my right a big Canada goose launching itself into the air. I barely had time to register what was happening, but I had a pretty good idea that it was going to hit me as I rolled by.

It did. It flew right into my right side, hitting my helmet with its head, my thigh with its feet. A full-on goose body-slam! BUT the weight and perfect balance of my Timbuk2 bag somehow had made me so solid on my bike that I didn’t go down, to the amazement of two tourists who were walking towards me on the path. As I’ve told this story to cyclist friends, they shake their heads when I tell them I didn’t hit the deck. We all seem to agree that it was the bag’s weight and balance that saved me, so I thought I’d finally take the time to write and thank you all.

Thanks for making such a rockin’ product. I promptly asked for another one (in a different size) for my birthday. :-)

With kind regards,

The Ultimate Backside Protector

Thank you, Timbuk2!

I swear, my Timbuk2 bag saved my life today. On the first warm, sunny Sunday in NY, I was riding with a friend to Central Park. I lent my friend my mountainbike with slicks and I rode my Dahon folder. The Dahon has fenders and I am constantly aware of the fenders because of the terribly bumpy NY roadways.

Well, with a little bad luck, the rear fender rattled loose, caught the rear wheel and within moments, the entire rear of the bike was skating on part of the rear fender. It must’ve been some sight, but all I saw was the rear end of the bike fly underneath me and twist right in front of my handlebars. If anyone has ridden a Dahon folder, the steering is very sensitive and after a certain degree of turning, the bike will just flop down, losing all balance. Well, the bike did just drop to the ground and I was going about 20 miles an hour, wearing only a tshirt, shorts and my Timbuk2 Dee Dog (Large) Classic Messenger Bag. (I kind of wear my Dee Dog a little lower so that I can swing it around to grab my phone in one of the pockets, plus it makes a great ass protector in the rain.

Anyways, when the bike dropped down and slid away from me, I slammed down onto my Dee Dog, hard, and slid 5 to 10 feet. I had no injuries nor any road rash. I swear the bag saved my life. Inside the bag was a light jacket, some manila folders, my camera, my phone, a sac of tools, an internal divider, and a cap. Luckily there wasn’t much traffic, but I swear, the concrete would have ripped my butt and back into shreds and I would’ve sustained some serious bruising on my back if not worse. The bag sustained zero scarring or damage. When I got to the park and sat down for awhile, I noticed that I has holding my Dee Dog with both arms, like holding a baby. Thank you Timbuk2!

Background: I am a SF native, but am going to school in NY. After riding bikes for the last 10 years in the Bay Area, I was well equipt to ride in NY. NY streets are full of potholes and bad drivers. The city has few bike lanes and doesn’t allow biking on the sidewalks. Also, I am in dental school and must carry equipment to lab every other day. The Dee Dog (Large) has been a godsend, resisting stone molds and sharp instruments. The bag even helps on the street when grocery shopping. Nobody here drives, so carrying items with you is the only way to get things home, even if you must hail a cab. Even when there’s nothing in the bag, I always carry it just in case. I swear it has so many uses, a 12can fridgepack slides right in!

True Love: A Man and His Bag

Dear Creator,

On a glorious day some eight years ago I stopped at my favorite bike shop in Edmonton (Red Bike) and purchased an El Ocho (medium) messenger bag. At the time I, in ignorance, thought it was purchased in a financially irresponsible whim. In reality it was an inspired act of brilliance. Since that fateful day the bag has not ceased its hugging of me. It has been with me on a year-long bike tour of Europe, on endless shorter trips, hiking, biking, driving, unicycling, climbing. It brings home my groceries and it carries my books - it is always with me and holds all that I ever need. It is my trunk, my pocket, my wallet, my security blanket; it is my home. It is well known amongst my friends as “the magic bag”. I feel naked if I go anywhere without it, and my shoulders are now permanently unbalanced. I’ve used it as a pillow and a blanket and a chair and even as a friend. I thank you, creator, for creating it.

Last summer I took a corner a little too fast on my tired old single speed bike (the only material thing that I love as much as my messenger bag). My rim folded in half. I became like a bird, and then like a stone. I remember my face moving rapidly towards the pavement and then somehow the bag, the magic bag, my love, my life, it moved beneath me, it twisted me onto my back and placed itself under me, catching me in its embrace, giving of itself for me. I slid across the pavement on its padded form, miraculously receiving hardly a bruise or scrape.

Sincerely,
Dan Binnema

Doggy Bag Day

Howdy Timbuk2,I purchased a Timbuk2 bag about four years ago at Whole Earth Provisions Co. in Houston. The bag has gotten heavy use since on daily commutes by bike and countless day hikes. Since I’ve moved on to San Francisco, the bag has been used primarily to tote my 10 pound canine around town. The bag is the ideal size for a smaller dog and much more comfortable than other pet carriers I’ve tried. From the safety of my Timbuk2 bag, Skippers has been able to explore the wilds of California, from Big Sur to Noe Valley. And he sends his thanks.

General Questions

How do I wear my bag and what do I do with this extra strap?

Our single-strap bags are meant to be worn over one shoulder and across the body. If you are right-handed, you most likely will want to put the main strap over your left shoulder, so that the bag is resting near your right hip. If you are left handed, then you will likely want to place the main strap over your right shoulder. When you’re through getting stuff in or out of your bag, just slide the bag on to your back. The bag will “feel” better with some weight in the bag.

The cross strap is used to secure the bag to your back. After throwing the bag’s main strap over your shoulder, slide the female end of the cross strap so that it rests at your sternum. Then just click the male end of the cross strap into the female end and pull the excess slack. Cross strap love. >>>Click here to have our model show you how.

Are Timbuk2 bags waterproof?

The exterior of our bag — the Cordura® or Ballistic Nylon — provides durability, and the lining provides moisture protection. So if you’ve got the bag closed properly, your stuff should stay dry.

Most companies consider Cordura® alone to be “waterproof.” We know that’s not completely true. After a typical, unlined Cordura® daypack is more than a month or two old, it just will not keep your stuff dry in a serious rain. Our messenger bags, on the other hand, have a fully waterproof liner for extra protection.

That said, be aware that these are not like kayakers’ dry bags with welded seams and a roll-down flap. Dry bags provide the very best in moisture protection but are inconvenient to use on a daily basis when you need to easily get in and out of your bag.

Water resistant and convenient for daily use, Timbuk2 bags give you the best of both worlds.

What’s the difference between Cordura® and Ballistic?

The difference is mostly cosmetic, both materials provide maximum durability. Our Ballistic and Cordura® fabrics are selected for their superior strength, abrasion resistance, and color retention compared to less-expensive, less-robust polyester fabrics. Both fabrics consist of high-performance, 100-percent nylon and are back-coated with polyurethane waterproofing.

The Ballistic has a higher sheen, brighter colors and a smoother surface. Cordura® has a finer weave and matte finish, for a traditional, more rugged look. In sum, your selection is largely a matter of personal style.

How do I wash/dry my Timbuk2 Bag?

Ballistic and Cordura bags without padding, such as the Classic Messenger Bag, can just be thrown into the washer and hung out to dry. We suggest washing it with like colors in cold water on the gentle cycle with a mild detergent.

Bags with specialty fabric such as wool or hemp and bags with padding, such as the Commute, Laptop Messenger, and Laptop Sleeve, should be spot cleaned only since specialty fabric and padding will not do well in the washing machine. Artist Canvas Bags and Limited Edition fabrics should not go in the washing machine and should be spot cleaned to avoid shrinking or damaging the artwork you created/special material.

Bags made of waxed canvas should be hand washed and hung out to dry.

*Important: NEVER put any Timbuk2 bag into the dryer, unless you want melted waterproof liner permanently stuck to the inside of your dryer. You can always clean your bag with mild soap and warm water using a nylon-bristled brush. Do not saturate the fabric. For best results, clean the entire panel, not just the soiled area. Stubborn stains may be treated with Simple Green®, Fantastik®, Woolite® or 409®. Foaming upholstery cleaners made for wool-nylon blend fabrics also works well. After your fabric has been cleaned, spray it with Scotchgard® to restore its water, dirt and stain resistance properties.

Note: When using any commercial cleaning product, follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully.

Can I trick out a bag I already have with custom features?

Here’s the deal, the custom features that we offer are sewn into the bag as it’s made. To add those items to a finished bag would require complete disassembly, which would take far more time and money than making a completely new bag. This goes for adding additional pocket, straps, etc.

I have a bag I designed that I think would make a cool addition to your line, do you want to see it?

That’s awesome! We love that you want to show us your creation and don’t doubt that it’s kick ass, but what do you think this is “Project Runway?” We have our own internal process for identifying product opportunities relative to our brand strategy, however we love to see pictures and hear stories about you and your bag so send all bag love related info to customerservice@timbuk2.com.

Bag in a Box

What is a Bag in a Box?

The Timbuk2 Bag in a Box is a great way to give a friend the gift of customization. Inside each Bag in a Box is a $125 gift card that can be redeemed at www.timbuk2.com or at our Hayes Valley Retail Store for a Custom Messenger Bag or any other product of his or her liking. He or she gets to pick out the colors and style, but you get all the credit! It’s much more original than giving cash. And, it’s far better than picking a bag, only to find out they don’t like the colors you’ve selected. Yikes!

How is a Bag in a Box card different from a Timbuk2 Gift Certificate?

Bag in a Box cards are physical gift cards, with a set value of $125 and a special scratch-off Secret Code. You can buy them here or at select retail locations. Timbuk2 Gift Certificates can be for any dollar amount and are exclusively available on our Web site. To order a Timbuk2 Gift Certificate go here. Timbuk2 Gift Certificate codes are sent via e-mail and there is no physical card sent to the recipient. In other words, both can be given as gifts, but only the Bag in a Box can be wrapped in gift paper. Both can only be redeemed at www.timbuk2.com.

Where do I return my bag that I ordered with the Bag in a Box card?

Custom Bags are final-sale-only. But if you used your Bag in a Box card for a non-custom-made bag, and it’s within 30 days of purchase, you can return it directly to Timbuk2 for an online store credit. For more information on our return policies and procedures, please click here.

My Bag in a Box card isn’t working. What do I do?

First, make sure you’re using the Secret Code, not the Serial Number. Your Secret Code has dashes in it. If that doesn’t work, please send an e-mail to our customer service staff at customerservice@timbuk2.com. Include your Serial Number, and we’ll track down the problem and get right back to you.

How does the Bag in a Box card work?

Your Bag in a Box gift card is a technological wonder. The Secret Code on the back is stored in our super-high security electronic bank vault until you wish to buy something. We even keep track of any unused balance, so you can shop more than once with your card.

Classic and Custom Messenger Bags

What’s the difference between Classic and Custom Messenger Bags?

Classic Messenger and Custom Messenger Bags are similar, yet different. They both have the same form factors — the same size dimensions and core components. They also both come in Ballistic and Cordura® fabrics. And they both have the Timbuk2 Quality Guarantee.

Classic Messenger Bags are pre-determined color combinations that we think look nice. Think of them as our House Collection. We update these color combinations twice a year. We see a lot of bags and often include some of the most popular selections in the Classic line. However, with Classic Messenger Bags there’s no ability to add a center divider, grab strap, or change any other features of the bag.

Custom Messenger Bags are essentially the same bag, however you get to choose the colors, features, and options that YOU want. Custom Messenger Bags cost $25 more than the Classics, but you get to completely tweak the bag to your liking. We build each one to your exact specifications.

And, there’s one other difference between the two products. Custom Messenger Bags are not returnable. “Why not?” you ask. Read the next Q and A.

Why can’t I return my Custom Bag?

Since we hand build each Custom Bag to your specifications, we do not accept returns for the bags built using the Bag Builder. But they will match your unique style. After all, you might think that a purple, chartreuse and brown bag with a red logo looks great, but then again you’re special.

That said, we do stand behind the quality of our products, and if the bag is defective then we will replace it, in the same size and color combination you selected originally.

Can I add a padded laptop compartment to my Custom Bag?

Yes. You can add a Laptop Insert to our Small, Medium or Large Messenger Bag in the Bag Builder.

What is the difference between a Custom Messenger with a laptop insert and a Custom Laptop Messenger?

Nothing really. The Laptop Messenger comes standard with a grab strap. If you select a Messenger and add a laptop insert, your bag will not include the grab strap automatically, though you can still add it in the Bag Builder if you want it. The choice is up to you, that’s what we call custom!

Custom Lex Pack

This looks like your Pro Series Backpack. What gives?

Sure does, however the Lex Pack is available in whatever colors you select in the Bag Builder. You asked for a custom backpack, you got it! The Pro Series Backpack features black x-pac, a super light weight and uber waterproof material preferred by professional messengers but is not customizable. That’s the big difference.

Is the Lex Pack Waterproof?

Just like our Messenger Bags it features a waterproof liner that’ll keep your stuff dry in a downpour. That being said, our same old disclaimer holds true, it’s not like a kayaker’s dry bag with welded seams but it still gives you plenty of protection from the elements, after all it’s a Timbuk2!

Why is there no XL Lex Pack?

The way we see it, you either need big or ginormous (newest word in the Webster’s New Millennium Dictionary…look it up). So, we offer you one or the other. For those of you looking for middle of the road huge, check out our tried and true Large Messenger Bag.

Limited Edition Bags

What happened to that Limited Edition Bag I saw a few months back?

Our Limited Edition bags are just that, limited editions. Once they are gone they are gone! We know you like to be distinctive, and we like keeping things fresh, so check out our Limited Edition Bags for our current selection in specialty materials, and don’t forget, when we say “Limited Edition” we mean it!

Can I have the Limited Edition materials made into a different bag other than what’s on your site?

Sorry, these are specialty materials and may not work with certain bags. What you see is the best combination in terms of fashion and durability, trust us.

Pro-Series Messenger Bag

What’s the difference between the x-Pac material and Ballistic or Cordura?

x-Pac, like our Ballistic and Cordura is a durable nylon. However, due to a three part laminate process it is three times lighter than Ballistic and Cordura and it is waterproof up to 200 pounds per square inch.

Can I add a Grab Strap or Center Divider to a Pro-Series Bag?

The Medium Pro-Series comes standard with a Grab Strap but we cannot add any other custom features to the Pro-Series Messenger Bag, and the Grab Strap is not available on the Large or XXL.

Metro Bag

Can I customize the Metro Bag?

The Metro is only available in the colors displayed online, we cannot accommodate special requests at this time. However, you can customize our XS Messenger Bag.

How long is the Metro shoulder strap?

The Metro has a fully adjustable strap that is 48″ at its longest.

Does the Metro have a Cam Buckle?

No, the Metro has a removable shoulder strap that connects to two D-rings via J-hooks. It does feature a “Quick-adjust shoulder strap”.

Is the Metro smaller than the Small Classic Messenger?

Yes, the Metro is smaller than the Small Classic Messenger Bag. It is most comparable in size to our XS Messenger Bag.

Does the Metro have a water bottle holder?

The Metro features a mesh pocket in the main compartment perfect for carrying a small water bottle.

Does the Metro come with the same organizational pocket panel as the Classic Messenger?

The Metro comes with a smaller version of the same organizational pocket panel featured on our Classic Messenger Bag.

Commute

Will my laptop fit?

Internal Laptop Compartment dimensions are listed here. We suggest you measure your laptop and as long as the dimensions do not exceed the dimensions listed online, you’ll be all set!

Can I customize the Commute?

The Commute is only available in the colors displayed online, we cannot accommodate special requests at this time. However you can customize our Laptop Messenger Bag.

Do I need to buy a laptop sleeve if I am buying a Commute?
