Job Summary
As Production Director, you will manage all operations of our San Francisco manufacturing facility. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the timely production of Timbuk2’s custom manufactured product in a cost efficient manner. You will lead a production staff of operators and warehouse personnel. Candidate should have a minimum of 5 years experience managing a sewing facility. The Production Director is a person of diverse responsibilities who has a passion for creating and manufacturing products, enjoys refining systems and processes to make them more efficient, is comfortable working in a technology driven, custom manufacturing environment and has proven experience using their skills as a leader to insure their staff is also working for these same goals. Timbuk2 intends to make its San Francisco manufacturing facility a visible showcase for the Company and the Production Director will play a lead role in enabling this objective.
Essential Functions
• Schedule production with cutters and sewers to guarantee on-time shipments; Review SF Made forecast on a daily/weekly basis.
• Implement and utilize system to track production output and efficiencies on a daily/weekly basis
• Direct the planning and budgeting processes so that the needs of the plant are anticipated and operations are properly controlled. Takes ownership of production costs (material utilization, labor, and variable overhead) for the products produced at the facility. Uses lean- 6 sigma production techniques (standard work, visual management, daily accountability processes) to drive improvements in the organization.
• Communicate with Director of Operations on order status and production availability and elevates delays or issues immediately; ensures outbound delivery schedules are met and works with Logistics Coordinator to select preferred transportation providers.
• Actively participates in the Development and Operations Planning process for the commercialization of new products in the SF Factory as needed
• Develop and maintain QC process, and insures this is applied to all production to guarantee order accuracy and overall quality standards.
• Encourage accident prevention by promoting warehouse cleanliness and closely monitoring work environment to insure safety procedures are being followed daily; ensures that all safety concerns are addressed.
• Develop and build a team environment; train and/or hire staff as necessary to maintain excellence in manufacturing processes and quality programs.
• Promote harmonious working relationship with all factory staff, including sewers and cutters across all cells, through training of first line supervision in effective supervisory techniques, expedient and equitable resolution of conflicts and continual communication with the work force as well as to promote confidence in the Company and management.
• Initiate and direct planning for current and future requirements for manpower, equipment, and space to effectively, efficiently and profitably manufacture the products produced in the SF Factory.
• Serve as a liaison between the factory and office, communicating needs of factory to office staff and needs of customers.
• Work closely with HR department and insure that the production staff is updated on all new and current company policies and programs; manage personnel issues by soliciting feedback from team leaders with assistance from HR and providing feedback as needed.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
• 5 – 10 years production experience, in soft goods or apparel.
• Excellent problem solving abilities and proven ability to affect and manage change.
• Proven ability to complete projects on schedule with a focus on refining production methods to increase margin.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to juggle constantly competing priorities within a multi-channel business.
• Understanding/ability of sewing & cutting techniques and fabric utilization.
• Knowledge of Great Plains or similar inventory/order applications
• Proficiency with MS Office applications and other database management software; Proficiency in Excel skills a must.
• Skills to communicate clearly at all levels- verbally, written and face-to-face and exceptionally practiced phone and email skills.
• Capacity to solve problems effectively and to make good decisions in order to meet departmental expectations consistent with company policies.
• Cantonese language skills a plus
